Ello!

Im working on a bit of a "Pet Project" (Get it? :)   ) and I need some
feedback on a "Parrot Profiler"....

Nothing too serious, but if you were to design a "quick fact sheet" on a
parrot, what key facts and info would you want on it?

For example, I have chosen the important points about my Harry, which would
be:

     Species: Umbrella Cockatoo
     Joined our world: 01/01/2001
     Gender: Presumed Male
     Talking ability None
Nature (MEN): Terrified of all men (except me)
Nature (WOMEN) Loves women (Long hair only)
Nature (OTHER PETS) Gets on fine with 3 domestic cats
Nature (OTHER BIRDS) Very aggressive - unpredictable
     Living quarters: 8ft x 7ft x 6ft Indoor Aviary
Attention required: Min 3 hours 1 on 1, 3 hours indirect
Noise Level Loudest animal I have ever heard
Monthly Cost £90 (Food, Toys, Cleaning Supplies)
Total Weekly Time Requirement 30+ hours

Anything obvious missing?  What would you guys suggest?  It's a pretty smart
project and I will post full details later in the week when finished.

IIRC the male's eyes are black while the females are brown

U2s aren't prolific talkers, but they do have the ability.

The amount of time one spends is up to the owner. The above might be
nice, but IMO is exaggerated. Sally Blanchard said that a parrot needs
about 15 minutes hands on time a day
>      Noise Level Loudest animal I have ever heard
>      Monthly Cost £90 (Food, Toys, Cleaning Supplies)
That's about $160 US. How do you break it down?

Thanks,

If all I gave Harry was 15 minutes a day, my girlfriend would be a very
happy lady and harry would be a very unhappy bird I guess!

Sorry my post wasn't really supposed to concern the facts about Harry as
such, I was wonderinf if you would feature any other important info I may
have missed?  I am trying to design a "parrot fact sheet" which should be
generic enough when filled it, it gives a good and informative profile of
any owners parrot...

If the purpose of the project is to give prospective pet owners an idea of
species comparison before a purchase, I can think of some additional things:

1.    Purchase price
2.    Age at purchase
3.    Vendor (rescue, retail, breeder, gift, found, etc.)
4.    Description of toys which hold up and are enjoyed
5.    Response to children
6.    When asking for information about quantitative things such as noise
level and bite capability, see if you can design it in a comparative way
such as on a scale of 1-10, and then compare one and ten to something known.
7.    Since noise is a big issue, you may want to include something about
number and duration of episodes daily.
8.    If you are doing a website on choosing a bird, a user would want to be
able to search based on species, price range, noise level and other data
which constitute the matching of keeper to pet.  If you are just doing a
collection of filled-in forms, I'm not sure many people would have the
stamina nor interest to read many of the anecdotal answers.
9.    If you are doing a searchable date base, I'm sure I can think of more.

Grooming needs/frequency/cost
Requirements for companion travel
Diet/Special if any such as nectar, nuts, etc./Supplements if any
Curiosity vs getting into trouble scale of 1 to 10
Sedentary vs active scale of 1 to 10
Reproduction issues such as triggers (light, food, habitat).  Is this bird a
habitual egg layer?
You mention species but you may want to add sub-species - it can be even
more complicated with specialty breeding for color and hybridizing
xpenenyx made a good point with dimorphism indicators
Additional equipment used such as stands, shower perch, outdoor facility,
harness for outings,etc.
Bathing preferences
How far can they throw their food in feet and meters.

Holy god!  Interesting questions,
I wonder how many the average parrot owner would know the answers to?

Thanks,

Gary.

I'm not sure I could answer them all, but if I were researching the right
bird for me, I'd probably want the answers to as many as possible.

I hope you laughed on the last one.  It was a joke, kinda'.

:)  They are messy buggers, are they not? :)  When harry was in his smaller
cage, he was ALWAYS able to pick up his entire tin of seeds and through it
to the floor sending seeds and biscuits flying all over the entire floor!
He seemed to enjoy doind it....

Now in his aviary, all his food is contained in large meal food servin tins
and are located on the floor.

Watch for the "sideswipe seed toss."  It's great fun to broadcast the seed
sideways with a quick snap of the head.  I know I hear them laughing when
they

do it.  Timing is everything.  After I've done a fine vacuuming job, the
fun begins.  I only win when the dish is empty.

Oh yeah he does this too, less of a problem now but he used to love it.
One thing I like about Harry, when he eats soft fruit such as a peach or
grape, he is very gentle with it.  My previous too greys used to rip the
fruit apart like savage beasts, shake their heads and get sticky fruit juice
EVERYWHERE.

Very hard to keep clean when they do that.

Seed I don't mind, it's when they throw breakable objects (eg. a glass or bowl) across the room.  Tiled kitchen floor may not have been such a good idea.

Anybody who claims that marriage is a fifty-fifty proposition doesn't know a damned thing about women or fractions.

Great for poop cleaning!  Mines is heated and if I don't catch it, it turns
crispy and is hard to remove.

I have a shopvac (large vacuum cleaner with a 12 gallon (!) tank which will suck up anything, wet or dry - the hose is 3 inches wide so it don't get blocked).

And an industrial steam cleaner.

With all my animals and ones i work with i usually have something like
this only things i could think of are famorite foods and toys. With
toys i broke that down to things that excite them and then calm.
Updating sheets when nesassary. just incase of insodent to me,  the
care takers will have basic info. Have some to update thanks for the
reminder.

good luck on your "pet project."
