My budgie can talk, but...

...everything he says seems to be 'tweeted' rather than actually
spoken. He can say his name (interestingly, he can say 'Joe', but he
has also started saying 'Joewee' - which I have never called him) and
a few basic things like 'hello', 'pretty boy'', 'letttuce' and
'apple', but they're indistinct and are thrown in at random amongst
his usual high-pitched warblings and he often combines them into
gibberish.

I was wondering if I will ever be able to teach him to speak in my
voice, with my pitch, diction and intonation  - is it just a question
of talking to him more, or is this as far as he's going to be able to
learn?

Also, will it ever be possible for him to learn the context of the
things he says and talk back to me?

Ken, this news group is about wild birds. Try rec.pets.birds. BTW, I don't
think Joe will ever talk back to you. That's what wives do :-)

You wives certainly stick together, Tammie. BTW, I read on a central Ontario
bird forum that someone saw a female Northern Cardinal near Little Current
so they're gradually moving up to your neck of the woods.

His "voice" will always sound the same. As to "context", maybe. Birds can be
surprisingly smart. Some do seem to learn to use some words in context.

Remember folks stop lights timed for 35mph are also timed for 70 mph.
