Budgie spinning on perch...

I've had my budgie Dylan for a few weeks now - got him as a baby and
he's settling in well into his new home and getting very tame.

In the last few days he's started to exhibit some odd behavior. He'll
lean down and allow himself to fall forwards, then use his wings and
momentum to carry himself through 360 degrees all the way around his
perch, back to upright again. It's like he's looping the loop on his
perch. He seems to do this constantly now.

Is this abnormal behaviour or is he just having fun with a new game?
Will he be doing himself any damage from all that spinning?

What do you mean by 'constantly'?   Does it appear he's unable to
stand upright at all?   Does he hop around the cage from perch to
perch without balance problems?

My quaker gets in the mood to do the birdie equivalent of a handspring using
his beak instead of "hands".  He'll flip back and forth between two perches
for 15-20 minutes at a time, obviously enjoying his workout.  Once in a
while, he'll call over to me and say "Such a pretty bird, Zuuuuuumi!" (his
name is Zumi) to get my attention, and then resumes his beaksprings to a
round of cheers and applause.  After a while, he'll stop the beaksprings and
go back to his normal cage rearranging.

If this sounds kind of like your budgie is doing, enjoy the performance.
You have an undiscovered birdie gymnast... it could just be that your budgie
has discovered an acrobatic trick and is relishing it.  If he is having
problems perching regularly, get him to the vet.

Yeah - he has no problems with jumping around or balancing (he flies
fine too). When I say 'constantly', I mean that he 'loops the loop' on
his perch when he is not eating, drinking, preening, out of the cage
or sleeping (i.e. when he has nothing better to do). He makes cacking
and 'woo woo woo' noises as he does it too...

Maybe he *is* just playing.

Running in circles yelling "woo woo woo"??  Maybe he's the
reincarnation of Curly the Stooge!!!!!

I don't know about constantly, but my cockatoo seems to like ocasionally
doing something like that.
