Hi everyone.

I just purchased a wonderful male canary on Friday.  He's been singing
away so I hope that means he's happy.  I've had parakeets in the past
and decided to try something different.  I also have 3 cats so I had
to wait until a time when I had a place to put a cage that was
inaccessible to the felines.

He seems to eat a lot.  He goes back and forth from his canary mix to
his millet spray.  But I provided a slice of apple and some kernels of
corn and he didn't touch them.  Is that normal?  Can canaries be picky
eaters and maybe he just won't like certain things that I've read
canaries like?

Thanks,
Lydia

My canary loved corn kernels and apple.  Do you leave the millet in
the cage at all times?  My birds get millet only a couple times a week
as a treat.  You might try providing only his seed at all times, then
clip the apple to the side of the cage and see if he'll give it a try.
Don't give up.  Keep trying and he may surprise you.

I did have the millet in the cage and he ate it all.  The next day
when I put another apple slice and some red leaf lettuce and celery
leafy tops he really munched on it and seem to like it.  Ate all of
the apple and as much of the leafy stuff as he could from around the
treat clip holding it in.  So maybe that was it - taking away the
millet.  I'll try corn again one of these days.

Thanks!

Your hope is unfounded. It means he is advertising his presence; most
likely trying to attract a mate or marking out his territory.

With kind regards

Chu
