I have a cockatiel which is about 10-12 years old. he is very healthy and in
good spirits.
Question; How cold can the temperature drop to in the house before it gets
too cold for the bird?
We usually run the house around 64 degrees in the winter to save heating
oil. This winter, we will
go a little lower on the temperature, if my wife and I find it comfortable.
Will the bird be ok at a temperature of 58 or so in the house??
Thanks

A healthy bird can acclimate to a variety of temperatures - 58 isn't all
that cold. We keep the thermostat in our drafty old mobile home set at 62
in the winter (northern Michigan) and all of our birds - including tiels -
do fine :). Drastic temperature changes are more worrisome but if you and
your wife are comfortable, your birds should be also.

Thanks for the advice Sherry. I heard someone on the radio mention that a
cockatiel can survive with temps down to freezing, but I don't want to test
that theory.
Well do 58 and see how he reacts.

In the winter I keep my thermostat as low as it will go and my AG has
no problems. I'm in MI. The down feathers are great insulators.
