Hi All:
Just wanted to share Glacie's newest trick with you. I bought her some baby toy plastic rings. She's had hours and hours of fun with them. I put several of them together on one ring and put the ring around one of the branches of her tree. It's taken her over a week to figure out how to get the ring off the branch. She finally got it last night. But the best part is that after she got it off and played with it for a while, she put it BACK on the branch. She worked and worked but finally got it. I must say, that was after I picked it up off the floor for her a few times. I can't believe birds have such problem solving skills. It's amazing.
Thanks for reading.

That is why we love them, they are intelligent creatures, that we share
our life with.

Yes, it is very fun. :-)
I just bought Freya a set of brightly colored belt clip keychain rings
and hooked them all together in a big chain...
It's going to be interesting to see how long it takes her to figure out
how to get them apart! <G> She's trying pretty hard right now.
Her greatest joy in life seems to be dropping all her toys on the floor
so that I have to pick them up! ;-D

One of Jester's fave toys (and cheapest) is a set of plastic
shower curtain rings. I hang them on the bars of his cage, as a
chain or separately, and he picks them off. I also bought some
wooden toy components, the sort of stuff that is threaded onto
leather strips and sold for huge amounts of money as "bird toys"
and I'll stick these on shower curtain rings to hang them. Again,
he has hours of fun picking at them.
Baby toys sound promising. Especially the more durable things. If
it can stand up to a teething baby, it's probably going to be
beakproof ... as much as anything can be considered beakproof
where cockatoos are concerned.

This is very clever. Jesse is good at taking things apart, but
much less interested in putting them back.
You're right about the problem-solving abilities, though. Jesse
figured out how to open his cage door when he was only a few
months old, he flew into the atrium of the shopping mall where
his pet store was located. All the employees called him "James
Bond" because he could get out of anything.
Having such a bright animal for a pet is challenging, but also
far more rewarding than any other animal I've loved (and I've had
quite a few).
Keep those Glacie stories coming! Does "Glacie" stand for
anything in particular? (Jesse is "Jester" because he's such a
clown.)

Actually Glacie is short for Glacier. Glacier was our beloved, 12 year old
Great Pyrenees, who died in August. Glacie was born in June before Glacier
died, but she didn't come to live with us until September and we didn't
choose her name until we got her home. Glacier was so named because we new
he was going to be a giant white rock of a dog. Glacie is also all white,
hence the name fit.
Thanks for asking. Even though the pain of losing Glacier hasn't dwindled,
Glacie has filled that void in our lives with joy and laughter and complete
amazement.

Sorry about the spelling, folks. My mind still thinks in shorthand, even
after all these years.

This is usenet... ;-)
Spelling errors and typos are common!
If anyone flames you for them, they are lame. <grins>
Do, keep us informed about Glacie! She sounds like as
big of a clown as Freya...... :-D

Basil, my TAG, loves his baby rings (though I don't think he's ever put them
back where he found them!). What kind of bird is Glacie? If she's big
enough she might also enjoy musical baby toys. Vtech has a nice line of
durable baby toys. Basil has had his telephone for a few years and still
loves it. It's the first thing he plays with every morning. it might take
Glacie awhile to get the hang of pushing the buttons but I think she'll
really like the "instant gratification" of making noise!

Thanks!
Glacie is a year and a half old Cockatoo. Thanks for the suggestion. I was
afraid to get her anything like you're talking about because she can destroy
anything made of hard plastic. The baby rings are hard but not brittle and
it takes her longer to chew them up. I'll look around for the Vtech brand.
I'm sure she'd love something different. We just found out she loves
Christmas music. We've tried all kinds for her--rock to country, but she
seems to get into the carols. I think I'm going to try some Christian next,
since I don't think I'd enjoy the Christmas music all year round. Although,
it might come to that if she doesn't respond to anything else. :)

Ahhh yes... 'Toos can destroy pretty much anything! Still.. have a look at
the Vtech toys. In particular, look for rounded edges on the buttons (so
the beak can't get under them and break them). Basil once destroyed an
"elephant piano" in a couple of days because the keys had space under them.
Also, in general I leave all of the baby toys outside of the cage. That way
he only has 'supervised' time with them. He now has one inside because he's
had for five years and I figure it's safe.
They do make "bird proof" bird toys that play music too. In general they
are far more expensive but pretty indestructible. Unfortunately, the one I
bought was also too hard for basil to play so he never did.
Have fun with year round Christmas music! Basil has a baby "CD player" that
actually plays different CDs. He's had the Christmas ne in for over a month
now and I'm about ready to change it back to "Old MacDonald!"
