Does anyone here use Candles/Oil Lamps with Pet Birds around. The
general notion is that these are harmful for birds. However, I heard
of people with pet birds using Candles/Oil Lamps.
Please share your experience.
Thanks.

No "fire" in my house. No candles, incense, fireplace fire, matches,
lighters, smoking, birthday cake candles. There are 3 fire extinguishers in
the bird room, two smoke detectors, one of which is connected to a security
system that will alert the fire department, etc. We have a couple of escape
plans even though we have not done a dry run because the plan involves
throwing birds out doors into the yard.
When Adam from "Average Joe" set his pink teddy bear on fire, everyone knew
Joanne would go into, "see, see how easily it can happen" mode.
The smoke stinks, the fumes may be toxic, the flame is dangerous and it's a
very easy lifestyle of avoidance to adopt.
We do cook which has its own hazards, but I was vetoed when I suggested we
eat all our meals out.

Sincerely,
Joanne

I simply don't.
I read the information generally available on line, then weighed
the pros and cons and decided that I prefer not to take that
particular risk with my cockatoo.
I miss candles a little, but I gave my hubby a lava lamp for Xmas
lest year, and it's quite a pretty alternative.
Other folks are free to disagree with me. As another regular
poster here says in her sig line, if it's right for you, it's
*right* for *you*.

We are not heavily into candles and don't use them except at holiday time.
This year I ordered a bunch of natural raw wax, no lead wick, sootless
candles from blue corn naturals and used them with no ill effects. The birds
were on the other side of a big room, about 40 or 50 feet away. The candles
aren't cheap but they burn very nicely with a very slight honey smell.

I normally use candles only in the bathroom when the birds are caged in
another room. (They think bubble baths are filled with whipped cream so I
don't let them in there!) I did use about a dozen candles in the same large
room as them when we had that blackout. But all of the windows in the house
were open and the candles were soy based with non-lead wicks.

Four candles in the living room, three birds in the living room, at
least twice a week, for 21 years.

I smoked 1.5--2 packs of cigarettes a day for 30yrs no problem, year 31 I
had a massive coronary infarction(Heart Attack). When I asked the
Cardiologist what caused it..............he said "smoking, start up again
and it will finish the job it started". Point being it might be slow and
not noticable, but *it will get ya!*
That was 8 yrs ago and the after affects are still kicking me around.

Take heart Dave. After eight years off the smokes, your heart should start
healing itself. My Dad had a heart attack after smoking for many, many
years. He quit about eight years ago and his cardiologist says his lungs
look like someone who never smoked. The damage to his heart is slowly
healing. If smoking was your only risk factor, you WILL get better.
