A trip to the pet shot

Marco - 29 Dec 2003 23:23 GMT Since we're new in town, we're spending time looking around for petshops/feed stores in the area. Today we went to one that, although a wee bit overpriced - a lot overpriced: about $300 for a gcc!, they had a great supply of toys, feed and wonderful birds. They had a very cute Vasa parrot, gorgeous Golden conures, a few adorable BP2, which I don't think I had seen one in 'person' before... boy, they are pretty! Lots of 'toos & macaws, gcc's, timnehs, and small birds like tiels, finches, canaries and the most adorable, whinny little Ducorps cockatoo. You'd pet her and she would just melt in your hands! Adorable! The tongues & mouth of those BP2 were weird looking... very striking, ood looking birds... I'd still be willing to 'adopt' a pair if anyone is giving them up. :) And remember, they must come with it's own ss cage or big outside flight. lol

Why bother with a pet shop? Just climb that tree in the park and nab yourself a bcc! Lucky devil you

Marco - 30 Dec 2003 05:37 GMT >Why bother with a pet shop? Just climb that tree in the park and nab >yourself a bcc! Lucky devil you > >L LOL... But NOOOO! Those bcc's are untouchable! I was telling sis about them... she said the same thing you did... "just climb up the tree and get me one" LOL
And for those out there who are wondering what the heck Blondie & the VooDooMan are talking about; Chuck and I found a huge flock of bcc's in a nearby tree. This flock also includes 3 cherry headed conures. We've visited them a couple of times and took lotsa pics. :) Planning to go back very soon and visit them again. It is just too cool to watch them in flight.
Oh, L. Chuck sighted a small flock of cherry/mitred conures today in town, gotta go check them out soon.
Packing your bags yet? :) ~Marco~ *Transvestites are men who like to eat, drink, and be Mary.* Remove "pants" to email reply.

Have you seen the "Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill" (San Francisco) Web page, <http://www.pelicanmedia.org/wildparrots.html>? Be sure to check out the bird biographies.

Marco - 30 Dec 2003 12:26 GMT Sure have, Jen... though I haven't visited in a while. A very good friend of mine (aka Blondie) gave me a book called _Elsewhere in The Land of Parrots_ , by Jim Paul ... has to do with the Telegraph Hill flock. Really good book. Today we'll go check out the Cherry Head/Mitred flock... tomorrow we'll visit the BCC flock. Have to take turn because both flocks are at the known spots at the same time! ~Marco~ *Transvestites are men who like to eat, drink, and be Mary.* Remove "pants" to email reply.

Excellent. While it's a shame the birds were released/escaped in the first place, it's heartening to see them making a niche for themselves in the midst of human development.

Very true... and it is the closest thing to a wild flock some of us will ever know. They seem to be doing great.. I mean, they look big and fat and the colors and feathers are in perfect condition.
I don't think I'll have much more time this week for the outside birdies... holidays are still here, and family has flown in from all over to be together (Oy! the drama!)... but you betcha I'll be keeping an eye on these guys.

I tamed a semi wild BCC once, those beaks are like a sharp ice pick!! LOL Seriously though it would be great to see these birds in the wild like that though, I imagine it must really get some of the pet Parrots going when they can hear wild cousins outside.

It's that needle-like point they have to the beak: perfect for digging deep into flesh!

Max (BCC) is very loving to us, he's on my chest right now preening, but if a stranger is in the house he gets scared / mad , and even we have to be careful of him. He has sunk that beak tip into me a couple times and it almost had me worried enough to go to the Doc. The damn thing would throb for days. It was only male ego that made me hold out and see if it would heal. I could not bring myself to admit to the Doctor that the reason for my visit was my pet bird bit me. <G> When we tamed him we used a pair of my work gloves, Tight fitting Deer skin, very tough yet pliable. I still have those gloves and the right hand is all covered with scars from the taming of this little guy.
