My parakeet Merlin died a week before Christmas, and Mimi, his mate of
six or so years has been a recluse ever since. Since she is aged, we
are reluctant to get another budgie, fearing the new one will be
widowed in a sense once Mimi dies.
Any thoughts on how to bring her out of her shell ? She spends 99.999
percent of her time in a nesting box, coming out only to eat and poop.
Would taking the box out only traumatize her further ? The box was
first introduced to the cage about two weeks before Merlin died.
Thank you.

Are you sure she's not ill with the same condition that killed Merlin?
Or was he not sick, just died of old age?

IMO, remove the nesting box. She doesn't need to mope and hide in a box
that won't be used. And take her to an avian vet if she's exhibiting the
slightest signs of illness.

I think she's lonely. Why not get two more little budgies? That way
your widower concerns will be assuaged. Three's company, too.
