:) The pics from the amazon (some kind of yellow headed 'zon) were taking earlier this morning. The pine tree it is roosting on is right in front of my building, I can actually see it from where I'm sitting right now. :) Next step is to get a good camera with a stong lens LOL... Can someone help rescue a hot nikkon I saw on ebay? LOL

> Let's see if that link works.... Wow! That would be great to see that right outside like that. We will have to see if we can help you adopt a good camera with a powerful lens, maybe on one of the photography groups ? g I bet the noise of them in the trees must get the pet birds people have down there going.

Marco - 25 Feb 2004 15:48 GMT > I bet the noise of them in the trees must get the pet birds people have > down there going. Sometimes it gets them all crazy. One day the flock of BCCs were on the trees across the street, I took Pedro, our BCC with me. He had a ball... screaming his head off, pinning and doing his happy dance. It was great. There's a little park behind our building where birdies sometimes come to eat, we've been putting out seed to see if we can attract them. :)

When I was watching that PBS special on Macaws the other night all the birds were all perked up, and once when a flock in the show took flight they all three started in with the "alarm".
Kays - 25 Feb 2004 15:02 GMT Awesome, Marco. Truly awesome. Thanks for sharing!
Since I came in late on this one, could you fill me in on where you are right now that you get to see these birds flying free?
Thanks again!

Lauderdale. And the darned birds are all over. :) I expected to see quakers (they're everywhere) and when we lived here in S. fla in the mid 90's we got to see feral parrots once in a while, but nothing like now. There are huge flocks of blue crown conures and cherry heads/mitred conures, canary winged parakeets (which is much bigger than I thought they would be)... there are amazons, got to see a pair of macaws flying off, but couldn't tell what kind.. they were way too high up, could only tell by the shape.

All kidding aside, those pictures are amazing.

You know Tara... Chuck and I were talking about that same issue yesterday. So far all the feral parrots I know of in this area are new world parrots (I was told about a flock of lovebirds, but haven't seen them). Couldn't a cockatiel or budgie make it here in south florida? Hmmm.

Maybe some predator that keeps the smaller weaker one's from establishing themselves??

Could be that, or combination of predators and food sources. Im' thnking, since, for example, budgies are mostly seed eaters... they'd have a harder time finding foods than fruit eaters like conures or amazons. I don't know... someone should give me a grant and I'll go check those birdies out. lol

Couldn't a >cockatiel or budgie make it here in south florida? Hmmm. With the very strong flock nature of the birds, I'd guess they would have a very hard time being alone, and would have to be adopted by a wild flock, something that the wild flock would be wary of.
Without the safety of the flock, an individual bird would be very uncomfortable, and would have trouble eating and sleeping.

That makes sense. They would probably fall prey because of it too fast to ever get flocks started, not to mention they just don't have the life span some of the other parrots do. I would be all for Marco & Chuck getting a grant to study it though. Look at some of the other insane wastes of money they give grants for, this one would be interesting. Marco get those papers filled out!! <G>

I've head that the big ones fly daily to the Everglades area to eat.... *making shopping list* -gps -tracking collar/chip -charter chopper

Linda Ambrose-Bates - 25 Feb 2004 16:37 GMT Loved your photos, Marco. I warned my quaker, Kato, if he misbehaves I'm shipping him down to Florida to live with his buddies in the trees .... no more of this cushy lifestyle he's had for the past ten years .... LOL ! -- Linda
