I've enjoyed thoroughly reading about parrots in the wild in the U.S.  I
certainly wish I lived in area where they would come to my patio to be fed
:)

I'd love it!  Here I get excited if I see goldfinches and Carolina wrens and
chickadees :)  Some of my best budgies were 'caught' because someone left a
door open.

Oh what? What's that I see across the street? Is that a quaker's nest? Oh
wait... and what's that flying above? Oh yeah... those darn conures again.
I think the amazon's roosting tree is about 2 blocks from my house....
yeah... I'm being evil. :)

Will do!  He better produce these 'so-called' wild flocks once I'm there!

I was going to mention a novel I read called "Elsewhere in the Land of
Parrots".  They mention Mark Bittner, the OP, and it's really a great book.
Just thought some of you would be interested

Well, sometimes you have to get up EARLY to see the birdies... like way
early... like 7am LOL... I seem to recall a certain someone who, when told
there were some amazons outside, said, "yeah, that's nice" and went back
to sleep for another 4 hours! LOL

Well, you should've told me that... I'll make sure and the memo around, so
all these conures, amazons, macaws, and other parrots do NOT come around
so early in the morning... How dare they! LOL

I personally have to get up early... my rooms too bright in the morning,
plus, it is nice to wake up to a flock of BCCs raising hell at 7am! :)

My sister has gotten most of her birds from her back yard.  The
most recent one is a red rumped.  She has had a couple of 'tiels also.
I had a Finches? conure once that had escaped from a pet store.  I
returned it to them.  It got loose after a moult and before they could
clip it's wings.
I've seen pairs of black hoodeds over in downtown St. Pete on the
wires and have seen flocks of quakers in Tampa, St. Pete and down in
Sarasota.  I saw a loose Macaw once on top of a open shopping center
but haven't seen one since.

And I am not being mean.

Living with parrots is emotional rather than logical.
Logically I know everthing on Marco's list is true but I don't care.
The conure sitting on my shoulder at the momemt doesn't care either.

Most of us don't Lou, that's why even when many of us have had a bird or two
(or more) for years we will still come home with yet another.
Makes a good warning to new people "thinking" about jumping in though. If
even one of them takes a second look and decides now, rather than after they
buy one, that birds are not for them, that is a very good thing.

:)
That little list was not meant for us nutcases that keep them... it was
meant for those people who are clueless and will buy a moluccan2 just 'cuz
it matches the drapes.

I take no offense at being called a nutcase for keeping birds. Guilty as
charged.  The person who buys a cockatoo because it matches the the
drapes will soon find that what the bird matches is the pile of rags
laying on the floor beneath the windows.

It wouldn't suprise me to one day see a law requiring a similar warning
label to be attached to each cage or perch where any bird is being
offered for sale.   The trouble is that anyone who has the mindset to
buy a bird would just ignore it.  The little birdie is sooooo sweet.

Just give it some time. The lawyers will need something else to sue, and
then we will have the warning label on birds <G>
