I am looking into getting a bird, and the limited amount I'm finding online
has me confused.

I am reading that budgies and parakeets are teh same thing.  I am seeing
them treated as different kinds of birds.  One web site explained they are
the same thing and then that parakeets are a distinct kind of bird!

Yet another site thought they'd definitively answer teh question - by
listing every parrot species since the dinosaurs.   I can't wade through all
that!

Someone please tell me if budgies are really parakeets and if some parakeets
are not budgies?

If budgies are really parakeets, and all parakeets are not budgies, then
what is the advantage of having a budgie over a different sort of parakeets?
All I know about caged parakeets is that they don't do much and they usually
die.

Or is a budgie just a parakeet with a different reputation?

All budgies are parakeets.... not all parakeets are budgies.
The term "parakeet" is generally used to discribe smallish, slender birds
with long tails. So, a budgies IS a parakeet... and so are australian
grass keets and may others.

Similar to saying all poodles are dogs, but not all dogs are poodles.
