Thanks to everyone who responded to this query in mid-February.   Daisy, the
cockatiel, is still sickly and we have decided (along with the opinion of
the vet and books we are reading) that the infection is aspergillus.   She
coughs and wheezes throughout the day and we are at our wit's end with her.
However, she is a strong bird and is holding her own, although it's clear
she won't make it unless she is able to get rid of this fungus.

We are thinking of a new regimen of antibiotics, like the gel recommended by
Toucan Lady.   Thanks and we would be happy for any other advice to help us
save Daisy.   The vet does not give us hope.

I read of a couple who finally gave up their aspergillus-infected bird to
their vet, who treated him regularly with antibiotics.   But the bird
apparently was never able to shake the infection.  Nor are the books we are
reading very encouraging about a cure.

Thanks to the people who gave their kind advice.

This is a shot in the dark and I recommend the vet's approval before doing
this.  Oil of Oregano is supposed to be a natural anti-fungal remedy.  It
can be used internally or topically by humans.  There is a radio infomercial
which hypes the virtues.  It can be purchased at the health food store in
various strengths.  It can be diluted with oil and will take your breath
away if not diluted to a useable strength.

The doctor who does the infomercial claims it cured his fungal blood
disease; one which turned him from a practicing physician to a couch potato
who had to move home to be nursed by his parents.

If it is not toxic to birds (an answer I do not have), what harm could it do
to try it?  It is not expensive.

Dr. Cass Ingram's "The Cure is in the
Cupboard," how to use oregano for better heath, is an interesting book.
He recommends the oil of oregano, from North American Herbs. He says the kind
you buy in the grocery store is not real oregano.
BTW, it isn't cheap.
It comes in different forms.

There is also a supplement, by Quiko, made for birds, that contains oregano.
Someone, on another list swears by it, for respiratory problems.
It's called Quikon Med. It can be purchased here. Scroll all the way to the
bottom.

One last thing, that is my *cure all* for everything is, garlic. You can
sprinkle garlic powder on the bird's soft food or put the Kyolic brand of aged
garlic extract, in the water.
Good luck.

Thanks, TL, for the clarification of my suggestion.  I'm pleased to hear
that it is an option for birds.

I did find the Oil of Oregano in various concentrations at Vitamin Cottage,
a local health food store.  It is not the Mexican sage which is the spice
used for cooking.  I didn't think it was that pricey, at least not compared
to prescription meds.

I'd love to hear a good outcome for this little girl.  I had a wonderful
little Normal Gray named Daisy many years ago.  She was a beauty.

If your bird has a fungal infection, the last thing you should be
giving is (antibiotic) surely?
It should be on some sort of anti fungal.
According to a couple of websites, the prolonged use of antibiotics can
*cause* aspergillosis. I am amazed that your vet is giving antibiotics
when the bird has aspergillosis.
Here are a couple of sites which explain what it is and what
medications will treat it.

good luck.
