My 11 year old budgie has always molted more often and for longer lengths of
time than normal. Lately, he's gone through an extensive molting period.
These long moltings sap his energy, and can leave him more vulnerable to
illness.
I would like to know if anyone has any experience with excessive molting
with their bird(s), and what they did to try to minimize the length and
effect. Any special foods?
He has a great avian vet who seems at a loss as to how to try and slow these
moltings down. I've tried bird store seed/pellet mixtures that claim to be
good for molting budgies, but they didn't seem to help.
Any articles or personal experience is appreciated.

I would try giving him extra protein, and flax seed.

How many hours of light is he getting a day? If he is getting too much his
body may be telling him that it is time to molt, constantly. Make sure that
he is getting 10 to 12 hours of darkness a day, and you might want to vary
the length over the course of a year. Like Tucanlady said, up the protien in
his diet, and I would add hemp seed to it as well.

I have the same problem with my male kakiriki. He seems to feather up nicely in winter, but when he moults in the spring he goes quite bald and stays looking scruffy throughout the summer. On one occasion when I had to catch him he dropped all his tail feathers and ended up looking more like a lovebird. The female kakiriki looks beautiful all the time. He was seen by an avian vet a who couldn't find any obvious cause and suggested extra vitamins. I give them Vitapet (Vitamin A, D and E) mixed into their seed. It does seem to lessen the excessive moult, but not stop it totally. My male kakiriki is very active - and possibly a highly strung bird.

Is Vitapet a pellet? I've looked online, but can't tell from the description
or box photo. He's 11, and he's always refused to eat pellets.

It is a liquid (oily). I've tried vitamin mixes in the water before, but found my birds preferred to bathe in it rather than drink it.
