Okay, I know convicts are holy terrors and breed like rabbits but my 3
convicts are doing nicely in my 50 gallon tank with 2 clown loaches and
a pleco.
So, what other fish could I add that would be okay in this tank. I
wouldn't mind getting a few smaller fish (in schools) but don't know if
they would be fast enough to get away from the convicts.
Any ideas? What other fish do you have in your tank with your convicts.

What tank-mates are suitable depends on the Convict's age and breeding
aspirations. Without broods, many medium sized cichlids (ie: Severums,
Firemouths, Texans etc), large danios (ie: Giant), barbs (ie: Tinfoil,
Tiger etc), tetras (ie: Congo) and bottom feeders are fine. Once the
breeding starts, compatibility will vary as the tank becomes 'smaller'
;~).
Ideally, because cichlids are territorial, schooling fish should be added
before the cichlids are introduced to the environment.
