Is it okay for the tank to smell like a tropical greenhouse?
I've been keeping african cichlids since about 1997, and everytime I take a
whiff of the air wafting over the surface of the tank (I have a glass lid
over the tank) it smells, well, like a greenhouse; that damp, soily, earthy
aroma. Fish don't seam to mind and are generally happy... But I always
wondered whether if its a problem, and if I could get rid of it, would they
be that much more happier.
I never seam to notice the same smell in other set-ups... may b/c its open
aired.

Filtering with carbon can help remove any smells if it's bothering you. If
it's not, just make sure you're doing your water changes and ammonia and
nitrites are at zero. If this is the case then it shouldn't be a problem for
your fish. ;-)

Sounds normal to me - it should smell like moss. Good luck and later!

O good. But I'll try the carbon as suggested in another post and see how
that goes.
