Hi all,

If there are different kind/species of Cichlids in the same tank, can
female Cichlid (of one specie) mating & breeding with another male
Cichlid (of another specie)?  If so, will the babies become mixed
species?

Thanks,
Jimmy

Yep they call them hybrids.
not really a new species at all tho....  more just a mongrel
some crosses won't be fertile but most are.
Be careful a lot of fish keepers hate hybrids and will give ya a hard time
about.....
But, they are just defending their bloodlines with 'vigor' heh
what do ya have making babys at the moment dude?

Now, I know most problems CAN be solved with H.E.
But....  maybe overkill.
Besides they might be really pretty...  like with red fins and green eyes or
something.
:)

Hey all,

Thanks for all comment.  I'm a newbie to Cichlid and suspecting seeing
a mixed (hybrids) sold in large-department-store ... I could be wrong
as I don't know enough to identify them.  It looks like an African
Zebra with black stripes and an orange color body.

I have just started my first and new tank ... just bought a couple of
small ones of different species, plus another 3 of the same kind (true
African Zebra Cichlid).  They're only a 2 months or so old, so it's
another 4 months or so before they're possibly mature enough to
breed.  As I'm still not knowing enough which one is male and which
one is female yet.  Guess I'll just take good care of them for now and
go-with-the-flow :)

OK, but remember, that THE FLOW :-) in the Malawi tank has to be
strong, as the bio filtration volume, especially in crowded
tanks (less than 20 liters per fish). I have two large canister filters
(~5 liters of bio media, ~9 liters filter volume) with 850 lph output
each, plus two internal filters (fine mechanical filtration media) with
700 lph output each - all in 500 L tank with 35 fish.

Some cichlids will hybridised very easily when their natural partners
are not available. The crosses are not usually so nice.
