I just picked up an Elipsifer Eel (Tanganyikan Eel) at a local fish store. I
have not been able to find much information on them other then some tidbits
like this.

He seems to be doing well in my large mixed Cichlid tank and a pretty cool
addition. Does anyone have one that can share any info about or know much
about them?

Thanks,
Ross

Very interesting!  I haven't seen these guys before at our LFS's (or at
least haven't noticed them).  I'd be curious to know if a full-grown one
would be compatible with smaller Tanganyikan cichlids (shell dwellers,
smaller Lamprologines), or if there would be the risk of predation that
shows up with most eels.  There are also questions about territory, since
many of the Lamprologines need to have their rock territory to be
comfortable, and I'd be concerned that a much larger eel sitting in their
'hood would make my guys feel like they didn't have a real home.

If anyone has experience/comments, I'd be really curious.

Thanks,

- Rob

I don't remember the actual species but Tanganyika eels were available
more often a while ago. I haven't kept one for about 20 years. It was
about five inch long when it arrived but rapidly grew to about 18
inch. It moved the smaller rocks around at night so I don't think the
Lampro's would be very impressed. Pushing the filter pipes out was
another hazard. It also had a habit of wrapping around the heater so a
screen was needed to stop it burning itself.

WOW - it sounds like I may be in for an interesting ride. So far everyone is
getting along pretty good and he's been eating the blood worms they
recommended. Last night he was very active, I watched him for hours.

As far as eating smaller Tanganyikan's, the clerk told me he would. On the
flipside he told me to watch my Frontosa's since they sometimes like to eat
Eel's. If it becomes too much of a balancing act I'll have to move him but
for now he's part of the community.

Thanks for your posts!!

Regards,
Ross
