I got my first Oscars the other day. I've had them for a week. They
certainly are interesting fish. I got 2 of them, both about 2 inches long.
They're doing fine in a fully cycled, 75 gallon tank.

Interesting to note they spent a couple of days "sooking"  by lying on their
side on the gravel for a few days. of course they would snap out of it as
soon as some pelletted food was offered.

yesterday I decided to get them some live feeder fish from my local fish
shop... $2 for ~20  1/2 inch minnows.

MY GOD! they are pigs. now they are again lying on the gravel, but this time
it's cos they are so full. they remind me of homer simpson!!

an excellent fish for their fantastic personalities

O's are wonderful. having 3 myself. i wouldnt trade them for anything.
be aware of live food. not very good for them. possibilty of disease
and illness. if you have just gotten yours there is so much to
come.they really do have personalitys of there own. i have one that
loves a ping pong ball. the other digs constantly. i have to replant
daily.the other i think if she could hop out of the tank and just sit
in my lap she would.lol. they are wonderful fish. best of luck with
them. this is a wonderful place for information.

I got my first Oscar ( 2in )on 17 July.  He(?)'s now 7in, and a real PIG.  I
feed them Tetra Jumbo Min food sticks, and he can fit 7 in his mouth - they
are quarter inch by three quarter inch.  He's started jumping out of the
water to get food when it's feeding time recently... which can make quite a
mess.  He's great fun to have and I'm glad I only got one.  He's in a
550litre tank with other american cichlids

I have a tank of guppies, which provide some live food occasionally.

I got two VERY sick 2 inch Oscars that I couldn't bare to leave in the
typical Walmart fish kill displays.

Now 3-1/2 years later, Al & Peg still show the affects of a "bad
childhood"  They are  always throwing and breaking the furniture. They
dislodge filter intake tubes, break thermometers, airstones, throw rocks
at the glass, and they broke the glass top and light on their 75 gallon
tank.

Now, even though they haven't broken the plastic hoods on their 150
gallon tank, they have managed to break the light. I hear them getting
rowdy and have to go settle them down. I find them with divots in their
numb skulls with pieces of flesh hanging off them. They heal quick
enough, but I wish they would just be content tossing their 4 foot piece
of African wood around.

I hope by the 2nd week in January to have them in a 96x25x25 240
gallon. Seems like a big tank for just two fish, but I won't risk
putting Tilly & Silly the two smaller 9 inch Blood Parrots in with them.
Cause last time Tilly & Silly had Al & Peg hovering in the corner taking
pieces out of them. Kids!! I'm telling ya...wadya goin to do?
