Hi all,
Would it be unwise to get Henry a new cage? She has been in this one for
the entire 13 years that I have had her. If I set up the new cage the same
(more or less) as the old cage would there be any anxiety b/c of the change?
If yes, obviously this is something I am not going to do.
My reasons for wanting to get a new one...
- hers is old and looking ratty regardless of how well it's cleaned.
- I would like to be able to put more toys and perches in it for her to play
with
- I would like to give her more space
- I am considering adding another tiel to the family once I go back to
work - currently I am at home all day just about every day so she gets lots
of attention from me, but this will be changing, and I know it's not fair
for her to be alone
- of course I understand that whether or not these two tiels would be
able to share a larger cage is entirely dependent on whether or not they
will tolerate each other
Update on the eggs: she has laid 5 so far. 4 have survived (the first one
she laid from her perch so it fell and cracked). The time between eggs
seems to be growing. I have been keeping a close eye on her and her poops
are perfect, she's eating, socializing, munching on her cuttle bone and
calcium block...generally carrying on as normal. So I am taking this as a
good sign. Thanks again Oldmolly for your coaching throughout this ordeal.
It's much appreciated.
I found her fifth egg yesterday in a food dish...actually it's a dish she
likes to cuddle up to at bed time, so we keep it empty. She isn't sitting
on any of them. She was in the cage when I found the egg, so while she
watched me, I removed the dish, picked up the little egg and placed it on
the bottom of the cage with the rest of them, and replaced the dish. She
didn't seem to care at all...let out a friendly coo and then came out to
play.
Cheers,

Getting a new cage is a great idea.It might even stop her laying eggs.I
firmly believe that people worry too much about the effect new things have
on our birds. I swap and change cages and birds here several times a year
with no ill effects. In fact I'm convinced they actually enjoy getting to
know a new space.
