We are currently looking after the school cockatiels (as we always do
during the holidays).  They are a young pair but having taken to
protracted bouts of mating, we provided a nesting box and the followed
the dietary advice of this newsgroup.

The male is very attentive, and spends a good deal of time in the
nesting box and has prepared a suitable nest with the material we
provided.  She is, however, most reluctant to enter the nesting box -
'though she has come close to it on occasions.

Today, she laid an egg - but not in the nesting box.  Unfortunately
(it would seem) she laid it from some height as the egg was embedded
into the horizontal grid of the cage bottom, cracked and leaking yolk.

I can't think of any other strategy other than providing lots of
nesting material on the cage bottom (in case, for some reason, she
prefers to nest there).

Anyway, am I right in presuming that a young and inexperienced female
might be reluctant to enter a dark nesting box (even with the male
inside singing sweetly) - and that patience is the best strategy?

Is the hole in the nestbox large enough? I had a hen that would not enter
the box even though the cock spent a lot of time in there, so we enlarged
the hole and in no time she joined him. She was a first time breeder as well
so maybe the small hole made her uncomfortable about entering the box. This
may not be the case with yours but it is just an idea that may help from my
personal experience.

Does the school mind you breeding with their birds? What do you intend with
the babies bearing in mind there is already a large number of unwanted
cockatiels in the world?
I know as I took another 2 in on the weekend :0(

Will you leave the babies parent reared or hand rear them yourself? Will
you be able to feed the hen properly so that you do help kill her through
eggbinding?

Will you ever stop being such a bitch?

These are reasonable questions but asked in OldMolly's usual way of p*ssing
people off a tad .. oh well.  Offering some links or advice rather than
asking leading questions to make someone feel bad who is helping a school
out may redeem things though ......

I doubt it. Why do you ask?
Ear Rings - 25 Jan 2004 05:49 GMT
OldMolly changes her name to get of people's killfilter lists.

No....she's never anywhere....no one would go near her.

You wanna talk about cruelty to Tiels? What about the ones that are being
held captive under the bridge and having to put up with a Troll for their
only companion? Not to mention all the weird scientific testing that the
"avarian" vet carries out on them. Wake up Molly, he's just a bird vet, he
can't impregnate you with a half troll, half parrot like creature.....

just a troll

just a troll

She claims to have 90 some odd birds and many more other pets. Personally, I
feel sorry for them. They have to put up with her crap everyday. I for one
am getting tired of her ill and crude remarks. I mean telling a guy to call
a taxidermist for his sick bird is pretty dam lame and mean. You'd think
that if she had all these pets she claims to have she would be more
understanding towards other bird owners who may not be as experienced as she
claims to be. Go away "oldcrabby" By the way, The incredible OZ says he has
nothing for you, and the munchkins are still undecided as to whether your a
good witch or a bad witch. Hold on a minute, this just in, the munchkins
have come to a decision and it has been confirmed that yes you are a bad
witch. So get back on your broom and fly on out of here before Dorothy zaps
you with those shoes.

why dont you go and check the headers on that "taxidermist"
post..................you will see that it  did not orginate from old molly.
Anyone who knows Pams posts knows that she would never say that, that is why
I looked. Go check for yourself it you dont believe me.

Sheila.

It doesn;t really matter. I can produce over 60posts where she calls people
"morons" and other nasty stuff. She is a nasty piece of work that doesn't
really want to help anybody and loves all the others to fight over her.

I, for one, am sick of it.

Would you mind repeating your reply, in context, as your reply looks as if
you have replied to about 4 posts, I for one dont have a clue which one you
are replying to  (my post was the last one ) my email header was at the top
of all the stuff that should have been snipped.

for example, this is my post in all that stuff.

Thank you for your response.  It does not, however, address the
question.
