Hi, I am the original "stupid" poster from above.
I am having my say here, so as it doesn't get lost in the resulting flame
war above
When I posted the original message, I was already taking him to the vet. I
meerly posted a message here hopefully to recieve some reassurance in the
mean time whilst I was waiting to go.
(Where I come from, you have to make something called an "appointment" at a
"vet", as in stupidtown there is no Bird E.R.
I really don't know why I posted or what answer I expected to be honest, but
I certainly didn't expect to start a war over it!! I guess I just thought
that somebody who had experienced similar scenarios may be able to say
something like "Well yes, if you have had a storm that night he may just be
spooked, let him rest awhile and he will come around" or something.
As it turns out he is fine! I am no idiot and I do care for my pets, but I
also have some common sense and he started to pick up again, I decided I was
a bit hasty in going to the vets, and that he was probably going to be fine.
Does that make me a callous, inhumane A^%&^hole?
I think some people, or fruitloops rather, in this NG <cough> *oldmolly*
need to take a reality check. I agree with one of the posters in the
original thread, it is because of people like you, rushing your bird to the
vet at the first sign of trouble, that the vet's bills are so high.
I stand by my decision, and my bird is fine, thanks. As I said before, I
won't be so quick to post here with my questions in the future. I thought I
was posting to a group of people with a common interest in Tiels who could
offer constructive advice in a considerate and supportive manner. I didn't
expect to encounter the Frickkin' Bird Nazis, led by Old Molly Hitler!!!

Here on Usenet, you are judged by what you post... I am 100% sure that if
you would've mentioned that you already had contacted a vet things would've
been different... but you neglected to give that one very important piece of
information... instead this is what you wrote:
"Can somebody please help me?""
"He can barely open his poor little eyes"
"Now he is sitting on the floor of the cage"
"I think he is sick"
"he won't whilstle or preen or do anything he normally does."
"I don't know what to do!!!! I hate seeing him like this!"
"Does anyone know what could be wrong?"
Of course the first thing someone will tell you is to take the bird to the
vet... by the way you sounded, it seemed like the bird was in really bad
shape.
I really do hope your bird is better...
*sigh*

Glad to hear the bird is fine. I for one, hope you do continue to post
things here.
I'm a complete newbie to cockatiels and the more people who post seemingly
simple questions the better. Yes there is the advice to go and buy a book
(which I have) but nothing beats being able to ask and discuss things in a
(theoretically!) non-hostile environment. Just killfile the people who
annoy and continue posting, the more people who do this the less 'influence'
certain people will have.

I don't know specifically what the deal is where you live, but I'd guess
that -any- veterinary office welcomes, if not encourages, emergency
visits without an appointment. You might want to clarify your vet's
particular policy with regard to this.
Right off the top of my head, what you wrote sounds like a
justification. Maybe not - I could be totally wrong. But even giving
you the benefit of the doubt, it's good to remember that there's
absolutely nothing wrong with making a mistake. It's justifying a
mistake that always causes problems.
Wishing the best to you and your pet,
Steve

Mark,
I am so glad your bird has recovered :-) Yes it is true storms can
spook some birds, but so far, my guys have been okay with storms.
Cheers :-)
