Why are all the cages tall and narrow?

I've been looking at cages on the internet and I cannot find even one
that is wider than it is tall. A web site said that Cockatiels always
go to the top of the cage, so you don't need a tall cage. They said
you need a cage that is wide so they can fly. I also saw another web
page that had plans for a home made cage which was very long and not
very tall.

Not sure where you're from, but a very quick search here in the UK showed up
this site that has a few cockatiel cages as you describe .....

Check your eyesight, there's at least 10 cages in that page that are wider
than they are tall (not tall and narrow)

There are loads of cages not tall and narrow. I use moncasters who
supply a great range of cages at keen prices too.

My favorite one, I have, is on the left with the playtop. The playtop is
removable also. Very easy clean and big, deep dishes keep surrounding area
cleaner.
