New Color mutation in Tiels?

No, I haven't discovered any new mutations :)
Just wondering, if you could 'design' your own color mutatin, what would
that be? (just be warned, blues and greens don't count).

I personally would love to see a completly black cockatiel, with with
flight feathers and the orange cheek spots.

(and for the purists, yes, the wild type IS a beautiful bird *g*)

A bright green, like a male eclectus, with white flights and cheek
spots.

I just read in my National Cockatiels Society Journal that they have managed
to breed a Silver Suffused Yellow mutation that makes the bird appear olive
green due to the mix of grey and yellow. I am searching for a picture of
this one!

Search for 'olive' or 'emerald' ... not as striking as you'd imagine...
kinda dirty looking actually. :)

Geez, I never thought that telling the group about a new mutation is acting
like a troll? What the hell did I do?!

Anyway, I don't like the colour. I found it on several sites and it is
listed as "olive" or "emerald".  It looks as if the bird is dirty or at
least has bad feathering like an Amazon with liver problems. Interesting
though. I wish I had the patience to type out the article but, I don;t.

Never mind Pizza Girl, Nadeana... she's a seriously disturbed nutcase.

Well, you get well soon...
And, yeah... that 'emerald' is not that pretty a mutation... Probably the
prettiest mutation I've seen was a Heavy pied pearl cinnamon male (one of
our babies)... it was all whiteish yellow with just two dark bands of
cinnamon on the wings shoulders... and pearling on those bands... and the
bright orange cheek patches. It was stunning.... I miss breeding
cockatiels. :)

You are really clueless and childish... the link was to the 'green'
cockatiel pictures... but as Vicki pointed out the link doesn't work
because it seems to be an invalid extension. Just trim it a little bit and
it'll work.

This link doesn't work although it's what's in the address bar when
you get to this page; the .pl extension means a perl script, I think.

Go to http://www.parrotpages.com/ and work forward.  It's not hard to
find the picture pages, and if you load from the index page, it works.

I would use use gene splicing to insert genes for blue and green and
whatever else I can put in and I would make a cockatiel that is bright
purple. It shouldn't be very hard to do.

I do not thin they "mix genes" per se but rather replace certain ones with
others by destroying dominat types and the recessive ones take over.

Don't quote me on that one but I know you don't mix black hair with blonde
and get grey.

Not all new colours are mutations, only a mix of existing mutations. Pearl pied isnt a single
mutation but 2 on the same bird.
Gene's arent destroyed or even altered when breeding 2 or more colours together, they either show on
a bird or are hidden as in a carrier.
I've bred coloured canaries for over 20 years and Cockatiels for 15, all mutations in all birds
follow the same rules of inheritance as in normal, recessive, sex linked and dominant.
You really should read up on genetics PG if you are going to post about them on here.

Breeding birds is about passing on genes not splicing to insert.
You have a couple of genes missing from the neck up.

Read up about "gene splicing" then comment again. This has nothing to do
with breeding.

Yeah, because messing with an animals genome is just a wonderful and safe
thing to do. Spoken like a person who really hasn't the faintest idea of how
dangerous and unnecessary this idea is. You really need to read Margaret
Atwood's new novel "Oryx and Crake". You make think twice.

Genetic manipulation by breed selection is one thing, but messing with

That's just emotional talk. I am all for gene experimentation. We're
all just arrangements of molecules. I think someday they will use
genetics to develop perfect pets with little or no physical or mental
problems, perfectly adapted for living with humans. Imagine a big bird
with bright colors, the speaking ability of an african grey, the
sociability of a cockatoo without the emotional problems, and the
intelligence of a 9 year old human.
Pizza Girl - 07 Mar 2004 01:29 GMT
How about an OldMolly with the intelligence of a 9 year old Parrot?...LOL

I don't think people should screw with mother nature. It always backfires on
us. I am not a religious person by any means but it will just get you some
how. Selective breeding is just "edging" MN a bit, but when you screw with
the basic genetics....hmmmmm.

We always think we know better. Ask Aussies if the think we should f.ck with
rabbits and dingoes or Californian's if killer bees are fun.
