When I whistle, my cockatiel snaps its head about once every second.
Anybody know why?

I believe certain frequencies resonate in their heads/ ear cavities. Their
hearing is better tuned to higher frequencies for determining shrill
whistles typical the bird chatter and your lower and closer toned whistle
resonates in his/her head causing a tickling sensation.

Our dinnerware bowls have a frequency that drives one guy here absolutely
bonkers. A simple tap on the side of the bowl empty and he shakes like
having an epileptic seizure.

When my girlfriend says "bonita, bonita" to my hen, she snaps her head
violently and opens up her wings. Not so my male, though. Go figure. I saw a
post here a while back stating that such head jerking is a sign that they
like the sound. I don't think so.

I'd say your 'tiel is saying, "Knock it off!"

Cheers,
JM

Don't you know anything?

You have to say "bonito, bonito" to your male!

In Spanish, adjectives that end in 'o' are for male objects, 'a' is for
females. Hence, bonita bonita for my hen.

That is correct  and why your male doesn't respond.

Su niño es muy inteligénte.
Los hombres quiere "bonito". ¿Está bien, verdad? Es facile.

Hasta luego amigo

I taught our bird to whistle the little melody from "The Good, The Bad and
the Ugly." The first note causes his head to twitch when I whistle it, even
if I just whistle that note.  His head doesn't twitch at all when he does
it, though.   Clearly he likes the melody, though.

That is SOOO Cool. I have tried to teach my teil to say "pretty bird'
but he can only whistle the same sound but it is not distingusest.

Certain tones resonate in their head or ear cavities causing them to flinch
when you whistle.

And this reply is based on what??
Would it be from your personal experiences of the voices in your head PG? I bet you flinch everytime
you hear a police siren!!!!

Ours seems to have no interest in learning to talk at all.  Fine with me I
suppose.  He whistles melodies from Dixie, Call the the Post (horseracing
tune), the Imperial March, Star Wars, tGtGatU, and he has gotten me dirty
looks from college girls selling stuff at my door because he catcalls at
strangers.  "It's my bird.  No, really."    The worst thing we taught him
was Star Wars because he fixates on the high note and hits it as loud as he
can.

My friend's bird, however, mimics his alarm clock, the telephone, his kid's
car alarm, the neighbor's car alarm...

Obviously thinks whistling is the most important to you or him.

I taught mine the Austin Power's theme song and he sings the first 4
notes to the song.... it's very cute! He also mimics the microwave
beep sounds and the beeps while pushing the numbers on the phone....
this is cute too! They certainly are characters :-)
