Won't eat apples

I started my Cockatiel on seeds for the first several days.
Then I added apple slices and it won't eat them. What can I do to get
it to eat them? I tried putting seeds on top of the apple slices so it
would taste the apples. It only ate the seeds.

Hmmm...  My 'tiels have never been fond of apples.  The only time they've
shown any interest was when I wedged slices between the bars of their cages.
I think that that appealed to their playful/chewing/destroying needs more
than it did a fondness for the fruit itself.  You could try that  :-)

Try green beans - they all seem to like those!  I clip them to the bars with
wooden clothespins (which they also enjoy destroying).

They do seem to go straight for the seeds though...  But I had read
somewhere that the seeds were an arsenic risk - have you ever heard of that?
Apparently, arsenic in the soil is absorbed and tends to concentrate in the
seeds...

Oh Wow, I never heard of that, but thank god I never tried giving him
a slice of apple with seeds in it.... Thanks for the info :-)

It could be an urban legend?  I just don't know for certain...

The one guilty pleasure that my whiteface hen enjoys now and again are
McDonald's French fries...  I know, I know...  Baaaad!!  But it's only once
in a while and it's absolutely adorable to watch her - she thinks that
they're great big seeds of some sort.  She splits them open and eats just
the "meat" inside  :-)

Like you said, it *could* be a myth, or maybe not.  I just won't take any
chances.

Mollie loves them too, and gets them once in a blue moon.  Of course, Mollie
will pretty much eat anything she sees me eat, if I'd let her!

Yikes!  Well, that explains why I didn't find anything in Google - it's
cyanide, not arsenic - I was barking up the wrong search engine keywords
;-P

Mine are the same way - if they see Daddy eating it, they think they should
have some too  :-)

Well, being a blonde...I'm surprised I remembered cyanide.  I can barely
remember my name some days!

Well, in most cases they're right.  Sometimes I wonder who owns who around
here!

On a sort of off topic note....

I brought home a new budgie two days ago.  This was a PetSmart bird, very
wild, not hand-tamed, and scared of everything.  Today, we just had a little
preening session, and I swear he fell asleep while I was scraping all those
pokies (feather sheaths)  I'm already head-over-heels in love with this
sweet little thing.  Now I just need a name for him.

I'm a blonde too and I have those kind of days as well :-) The good
thing about being blonde is always saying when someone goofs up is
"Well, what's your excuse?" *LOL*

You know, joking it off as "Hey, I'm a blonde, what can I say" or something
to that effect, has gotten me out of some scrapes every now and then.  Hell,
whatever works!

Oh my gosh!!  I LOVE budgies!  I've had a few in the past...  My last one
passed away about three years ago - he was ten years old (the one I buried
under the cherry tree).  He wasn't hand tame, but he flew around with my
'tiels and when I started to put them to bed, he'd go into his cage himself.
Sometimes he didn't and we'd have this little "discussion" where I'd get
into his face and say, "Benjamin - GO TO BED!!"  And he'd glare and me and
fuss and then finally climb into his cage  :-)
He really took to my one 'tiel and used to follow him all over the place -
drove the 'tiel nuts  ;-)

LOL...that's exactly why I got another one.  MacDaddy (1st budgie) is so
interested in my male tiel, and has bugged the crap out of Mel, that I
thought it was time for another one.  Of course, Mac still would rather be
with Mel, than the newbie, but I'm hoping that will change.

Mac will go back to his cage when I tell him to as well.  At least, most of
the time.  They sure can be stubborn little sh.ts though.  But I love them
to pieces.  I used to always want a big bird, bigger than tiels, but since
I've discovered how fun budgies are, I may never have to.

Sometimes I really miss my budgies  :-(

They're very BIG birds, for their size...

Ain't that the truth!?!  That's how MacDaddy got his name!  LOL  He's such a
BIG bird in this teeny tiny little body.  Not ever going to have budgies
again Mark?  Aw c'mon...they hardly take up any room!

Following this thread, and wanted to add my 2 cents on budgies.
They are big birdies for thier size, I agree!
I was looking over my flock the other day, and realized that a year ago, I
had 1 budgie. Now I have 1 cocktiel (Freddy, normal grey), 1
parrotlet(Kiwi), 1 lovebird (blue, black masked, Aurora), and the rest of my
13 birds are all budiges. Oops...2 babies just moved out to their new home,
so down to 11 total, that's ....ooohhh god....
4 new babies in the nest....geesh its easy to lose track of how many you
have.
Got Candy, Bo, Snow, Butter, Cream, Captain, Skye, and 4 babies (1 wk to 2
days old) so that is actually 11 budgies.....oh wow!
Caught one of the young ones pulling on Freddy's tail feathers the other
day. Freddy sitting on his ladder, and Sunshine at the foot of the ladder,
nibbling on Freddy's long tail feathers. Freddy would whip around, give him
heck, then fluff himself back into order, and sunshine would reach out and
grab again.....went on for about 10 min.
Freddy seems to have fallen in love with Bo. She is my oldest budgie, and is
NOT interested in him at all, but he doesn't care. He sings to her, he
proclaims his love like cockatiels do, and she simply ignores him to the
fullest.
We've been thinking about getting Freddy a buddy.
but the budgies have been my biggest joy. I could have 30 or 40 and I think
I would be in heaven!
Fortunately, my husband is falling in love with the birds antics as much as
I am.
I love watching them interact with each other, fly around the living room,
investigate other parts of the house (they are always loose) and they all
settled back home at the end of the day.
Said goodbye to Sunshine and Angel who went to their new home yesterday
afternoon. They were Butter and Cream's 1st batch of babies. (budgies too)
and full of themselves....!
Anyway, gotta love budgies....I had them when I was young and I love them
just as much now as I did then.
They don't take up much room in the house, but they fill your heart!
Cheers
Jen

Must....  Resist....
My ten 'tiels take up all of the room I have  ;-)

OK...with 10 tiels I can understand.  Can't imagine it....yet ;^)

Either way, urban legend or not, I think it's best not to take any
chances....

Oh yeah, the Fries thing.... Jasper loved the Wendy's fries and when I
got Piper I introduced him to the fries.... well, he loves them too!
It is only once in a while I give one or two to him.... I would always
put one or two aside when I got my meal so the fries would cool down
before I gave it to him.

This is funny.... Jasper knew what the Wendy's bag looked like so he
would go crazy whenever he would see the bag because he knew exactly
that fries were in that bag! *LOL*

My one hen, Daisy Jane, knows the crinkling sound of a potato chips bag.  If
she hears me open a bag, she's right there...

LOL  They're smart little farts arent they?  Mollie knows her treat dish
too, and soon as I walk into the room with it, she starts her little happy
dance.  Doesn't matter what's in it, if it's in the dish, she's a happy
little camper and will at least taste it.

We give ours Kashi Medley breakfast cereal as a treat.  That's the one night
they're excited to go to bed because we put little Kashi dishes into their
cages and they all go crazy over it!  Each likes a different part of the
mix.  The ones that like the raisins and get raisin all over their beaks are
adorable  ;-)
Jenny - 06 Mar 2004 14:44 GMT
Me too, with thier treat clip.
Anything that goes in that clip is worth a nibble!
I put alfalfa sprouts in for the first time a few months ago, and the bird
devoured them. Waited til I filled it then closed in in a circle to see what
I had out in today, and it was gone in no time!

Apple seeds can be toxic - if they eat hundreds of them at one sitting.

Apples aren't that important nutritionally, and lots of cockatiels just
aren't crazy about fruit.  Many like a wheel of corn cut from a cob (I cut
mine about a ½" thick), peas which they will shell like seeds, shredded
carrot, sweet potato, a little head of broccoli, etc.  Sometimes it is all
in the presentation also.  Some like their veggies in the form of a very
fine slaw (got a food processor?), some like them hung like toys or, as Mark
suggested, wedged between bars.  There really is a plethora of healthy foods
for them to nibble, so if he doesn't like one thing, you can always find
something else to try :).

My guy won't eat apples either - I wedge them between the bars of the cage
as Mark N. suggests - but he won't touch it. I guess he just doesn't like
them. But he loves his chillis!!!

What kind of chilis? I saw at Walmart a bag of dried chili's called
"Japan Chili" or something like that. They were long and skinny. They
were for cooking mexican dishes. Should I get that? Do you think dried
chili or fresh chili is better?
Mark Wilson - 07 Mar 2004 04:51 GMT
No, i don't use dried - i just pick them fresh from the vine.
Birdseye Chilli i think is the variety. I have them growing in the
backyard...
