I've had my cockatiel for a week and a half. It wasn't really tame,
but it wasn't violently averse to me either. At first it was
indifferent to me. It still doesn't like my hands, but now I can lure
it onto my hand with a millet spray. I have the cage between my
computer and bed. Now it sits on the computer side of the cage if I'm
at the computer and the other side of the cage if I'm on the bed. I
hope it will become playful and affectionate like I keep hearing about
other cockatiels being. If I get another cockatiel, I'm going to
insist that it be hand tame and friendly before I buy it. They had a
hand tame cockatiel at the bird store, but I bought another one
because it had prettier feathers even though it wasn't very tame and
cost $10 more.

A week and a half? You are doing extremely well. Keep up the enticement. You
will enjoy it for years.

Yours will be tame - give it time!  And you'll have the satisfaction of
knowing that the reason it's tame is because it loves you and has bonded to
you.  The hand-raised babies are wonderful (I've had both hand-raised and
not), but there's something mystical about a wild animal that learns to
trust you and then bonds with you...  And you'll have all kinds of wild and
crazy tales to tell about you and the bird getting to know each other  :-)
When you mentioned it moving to the side of the cage closest to you, I
wondered if the door was open?  If not, try leaving it open and eventually
the bird will come out of the cage and come sit with/on you.

Most of all, enjoy that little bird - they're wonderful!
