Hello,
This is my first post. Background: first-time bird/tiel owner; have a
female pearl called Fiona ("Fi") who's just lovely and is about 1 year
old.
Have discovered there's a lot more to keeping a bird than I'd
imagined, but it's all good so far. And, actually, from reading many
of these posts and from what the vet told me when I took her in for a
basic check-up - Fi has got quite an exceptionally friendly
temperment.
I'm finding she's quite expressive and generally it's easy to guess
what she wants from her behaviour e.g. thrashing her bell about when
she wants my undivided attention, but one thing I've not a clue about.
Occasionally, she has these bouts where she appears to be silently
gagging. . . not choking, but as if she's trying to regurgitate.
Sometimes it's just once or twice in a row, and sometimes she keeps it
up for a minute or two. She's never actually brought up anything. The
only thing I've come across related to this, is that tiels may try to
regurgitate for their owners as an affectionate gesture. This doesn't
really fit with the timing though - sometimes she's in the cage when
she does it and not, say, on my shoulder. She does tend to stare at me
while it's happening though. Any ideas?
Sorry for the ramble. . .
Cheers.

It's a common ordinary thing that 'tiels do. You should worry about it as
much as you worry about his eyes closing and opening again real fast every
few seconds as if it were say blinking.

My teil does that to and sometimes I will open my mouth wide and that
makes him continue to do so. At first I thought that he was yawning
but I am not sure. Same with head thrashing like bobbing it up and
down if I start to do that he does it to it is weird.

Birds do all sorts of things that we (humans) don't understand. What you
describe is common, not only in tiels, but in many other species as well.
Nearly all of my birds do it from time to time.
Enjoy your little girl....

I wouldn't be too concerned about this behavior. My two 'tiels do it from
time to time. I believe they may be clearing their crop (??)

I've found that when I'm rubbing Mollie's 'ears' she does that. I wonder if
it isn't a form of yawning, or trying to clear the ear holes in some way.

Most books say it's a sign of affection, but ours does it on occasion when
he's in the corner on his cage by himself so it's probably serves a
practical function too. Disturbing at first, huh?
Some people have said if you rub their cheeks around their ears they'll do
it too, but I wonder if that's just yawning to relieve ear pressure.
If it ever actually throws up, though, call a vet.

I always thought he was either yawning or gagging.... Every bird I had
did this so I always thought it was normal.... I guess nothing to
worry about :-)

My vet told me that meant a sinus problem but I don't believe it anymore. I
believe it means they are clearing their sinuses or something similar but it
is a normal happenning for them to do.

As long as pizzfacegirl believes it, it must be scientific fact. We can all
rest easy on this one now.

It may be normal for your birds PG but it doesnt mean its normal for all birds. After all PG you ar
far from normal, you are a single celled low life who abuses her birds.
