LadyTech - 27 Apr 2004 03:32 GMT And if so, how often?
Also, has anyone had a sandy perch instead of a cement perch? I am going to purchase a sandy perch sometime and was wondering what you thought about them? I've heard they are better to use.

I don't clip toenails on my birds all that often...I use the pastel perches and it seems to keep them short enough. I've read that sandy perches can cause sores on their feet so I never use them

I've read that sandy perches can | cause sores on their feet so I never use them These perches I am talking about are something fairly new. I guess they are suppose to be softer and safer on the feet. I heard that the cement perches can cause their feet to become sore if the perches or the birds feet get wet due to the lime in the cement.
good golly Ms Molly - 28 Apr 2004 19:23 GMT > I heard that the > cement perches can cause their feet to become sore if the perches or > the birds feet get wet due to the lime in the cement. Who did you hear that from? No lime can leach out of a concrete perch even when it is wet. Feet do not become sore either somply because they are not that rough, nor do the birds spend long periods on the one perch. I would be very interested to hear who you 'heard' this misinformation from.

And was the ad' for a company selling an alternative product to pollys pastels? Are you getting my drift :0) FWIW every one of my cages has a pollys pastels perch in. Some are several years old and have been put through the dishwasher often to clean them. Not one of the birds has ever had sore feet. It is my understanding that only wet cement leaches lime. Once it has set and weathered nothing leaches. I may be wrong but my own experience say not. The perches get soaked when I spray the birds as I do it with a knapsack sprayer and thoroughly soak them down to the skin. Too many birds to do it with a small plant mister. I would use up one for each cage and get sore hands from the effort :0)

The arthritis is mostly in my hands and they hurt as I type now from the spraying an hour ago. What do you mean by knapsack sprayer? In other words who makes it? Thanks Lily Mae
Marco - 29 Apr 2004 18:49 GMT > I aught to check into something like that to spray my 7 cages. The > arthritis [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > Thanks > Lily Mae I don't know where you are, but in the US you can find a pump sprayer at the home improvement stores,(such as Lowe's or Home Depot) in the garden section, for about $20. Fill it up with water, pump it a few times and spray away. Surely beats squeezing the trigger on the spray bottle about 1000 per bird. :)

Mine however holds a lot of water and you put it on your back like a knapsack so to move about with it as my cages are in 2 rooms. They are normally used for spraying nasty chemicals in gardens etc.

Pizza Gurl - 01 May 2004 02:44 GMT Make sure the damn thing is labelled correctly and boldly. If it gets pesticdes in it ever, it may kill your beloved pet.
Bad idea generally to use a potentially lethal setup like this. If a spec of dirt comes out at that pressure, or the spray nozzle came off or was maladjusted you may injure your pet's eyes or body.
> > > I aught to check into something like that to spray my 7 cages. The > > > arthritis [quoted text clipped - 12 lines] > Thanks, I'm traveling near a Home Depot today. > Lily Mae Mark Wilson - 01 May 2004 05:29 GMT But!
x/y + speed of dirt = omega 3 therefore y is safe because x is a constant, whereby the speet of dirt is relative to x, and omega3 is your Tiel's health with respect to the PG factor. The PG factor being how fast a ceiling fan can spin safely with a Tiel on board.
Caution: The P factor is subjective and unstable and extreme caution must be used when dealing with it.
There. My mathematical equation proves it is safe to use a spray bottle. Just because I say so. So there. :-P It's called Pizza-logic.

Ah, but you missed something Mark, remember that if you're going to come up with that equation, you need to substitute 'spray bottle' with something completely unrelated and irrelevant to the case scenario, like "watermelon". Don't you recall her speed/ceiling fan equation was factored in with "wood ducks" not cockatiels.

Sorry - I should also mention that the equation is designed with the use of a fireman's hose - not a spray bottle, so you have to factor in the watermelon and the 6 capers in vinegar, which can make your Tiel's bum tingle.
Firehose speed = Caper tingle + Rehydration from Watermelon There. That should slot in nicely. Oh and yes, you also need to replace your Cockatiel with a Cassowary.

Lyli Mae, Disregard Pizza Face's idiotic post. She doesn't know what she's talking about. These pump sprayers we're taking about are sold NEW and CLEAN, absolutely no pesticides in them whatsoever. These pump sprayers give out a fine mist or shower, there's nothing 'lethal' about them. Since you're only filling them up with water there's as much chance of it spraying out a 'spec of dirt' as there is of you spraying out an elephant out of it.
Maybe she's thinking of the pressure washers the orderlies at her mental institution use so hose her skanky self down before luckup.
I've been using these pump sprayers for years and the only accident occurred when I dropped the thing on my foot. :)

[quoted text clipped - 17 lines] >I've been using these pump sprayers for years and the only accident >occurred when I dropped the thing on my foot. :) There is one point to consider when purchasing one. Many times ... often! ... people buy them, use them and then return them with some off the wall excuse and get a refund. The item gets a cursory cleaning, usually the outside, and put back into stock. And one being in a shrink wrapped box is not an indication of an unused product.
When you get it home and open the box your nose will be a good "pre-used product detector". Just be careful.
I bought one for insect control of some roses and almost immediately the roses began shriveling. I took the sprayer to the Extension Service and they ascertained that it had traces of weed killer. So, someone had used it to spray their yard with Weed-b-gone, didn't need it again and returned it to XXXXXXX. They shrinkwrapped it and put it back in stock!!!

"Osteoarthritis is the result of a series of small injuries that occur over a long period of time. Years of hard work and overuse (like constant typing or incessant use of one motion in a sport, such as a golf swing or tennis serve) cause tiny fractures in the joint's cartilage and underlying bone, and the joint begins to deteriorate."

That's the one. I used to do daft things like carry a 56 lb sack of spuds on each shoulder, and when I had my antique shop, would move heavy furniture by myself and lift washing machines and stuff. I have always been a small woman, never more than about 120 lbs and 5 foot 2 inches, so it stands to reason I was never build for such work. In short I abused my body simply because I enjoy hard physical work. Perhaps if pizzaface tried it, she might lose some weight?

good golly Ms Molly - 05 May 2004 13:19 GMT > Joints do not wear out from work, they get stronger and healthier. Well it seems you know better than my rheumatologist then. Perhaps you ought to write a medical paper on your findings which are contrary to present scientific data. Dope.
Pizza Gurl - 05 May 2004 22:14 GMT Just that fact that you see a Rheumatologist tells me you are full of sh.t. These specialist deal with muscles and tendon and not joints. Arthritis does not occur in soft tissues. On the other hand rheumatism is a very old term dropped about 20 years ago, It is now referred to as fibrositis or sometimes fibromyalgia.
Bullshit somebody else moron.

Rheumatologists DO deal with joints and arthritis. Rheumatism is arthritis and in the joints. Fibrositis and fibromyalgia are in the muscles and tendons. Nice try, but you still don't have a shred of credibility here. In future PG, before you mouth off with your crap, stop and think there are people here who have a clue.
Marco - 06 May 2004 02:57 GMT > Just that fact that you see a Rheumatologist tells me you are full of > sh.t. > These specialist deal with muscles and tendon and not joints. *Ahem* From the American College of Rheumatology:
"A rheumatologist is an internist or pediatrician who is qualified by additional training and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis and other diseases of the joints, muscles and bones."

What sane > adult would be so childish? I am thinking this troll is no more than a > spoilt brat of a child who has a computer in his/her bedroom. If she thought she would get to me by trying to insult my son, she was mistaken. You see, my son is a nice man who works hard, and is respectful and attentive to both his rather attractive girlfriend, and me, his mother. He is intelligent and works very hard at his job, and training for his new career, plus doing voluntary work for various agencies, mainly to do with the environment (like greenpeace). I think the fact that this is so far removed from her own life that she gets chewed up with envy about him and tries to needle me. It doesn't work though because I am enormously proud of my son.

In my experience with a few different kinds of birds and concrete perches, how often varies quite a bit. My BFA is about 4 1/2 years old and I have never clipped his nails vs my lovebirds which need their nails clipped about once a year or so.
