hi, my cockatiel who up untill now I believed to be male has just laid an
egg, it is obviously unfertilised but what do I do in the best interests of
the bird? It is sitting on it etc and I don't wish to distress it any more
than I have to, any and all suggestions welcomed TIA

Is this a single bird? You might want to build a little nest box,
about the size of a shoebox, or a little smaller; she will be looking
for a dark place. You can put it on the cage, or inside the cage.
For sure, let her sit, or she will continue to lay, and get weak, and
run down. Expect a new egg every couple days, until she has around 5
eggs. Keep an eye on her vent, and if anything looks overly distended,
get her to a vet. Every once in a while an egg can get stuck; it is
called eggbound, and it is life threatening.
I like dustless pine shavings for the nest; you can get them at pet
stores, under bedding. No Cedar!

This would only encourage more laying....not a good idea.
Just let her sit on them where they are...get her out every once in a while
away from sight of the eggs to make sure she eats. Couldn't hurt to offer
some calcium in her diet...I've gotten the calcium powder from a pet store
and sprinkle it on the food. Or you can scramble up some eggs with the
shells crushed in them (no salt or butter of course) Mollie goes bonkers
for those!

My experience is that she will continue to lay, until she has her 5
eggs to sit on, no matter what!

Your hen will lay an egg every other day up to 5 eggs.
Best is ti leave the egg for 21 days or until she loses interest.
PS" Why is it nobody ever can give better advice intead of giving
stupid advice or getting nasty about it.

nasty advice?? i see a lot of good advice in these newsgroups. there are a
lot of people here, from very different backgrounds, all over the world..
you gotta expect a lot of different type of posts. and yes, some will come
across as nasty when they don't intend to be that way. that's just the way
it is.some are just being funny, or trying to be. others are obvious
trolls. some are funny trolls.
take it all with a grain of salt, and the world tastes much better :p

I'm on a diet, plus I eat all eggs with four pounds of bacon, hence my
mini egg requirements.

Don't forget to give her an avian calcium/vitamin D supplement to prevent
egg binding which is more often than not, fatal. I use zol-calD which I get
