Switching Water Sources

Maxine was given to me last year and she was being watered via a small pyrex
bowl, which she keeps fouling.  I'm trying to get her to switch to a
gravity-feed water bottle.  I placed the spout next to her bowl and
gradually reduced the amount of water available, as suggested by the
manufacturer, but she's not going for it.

Any suggestions?

Maybe you should take the old water source away.  Then watch for a few hours
to make sure she's found the new one.

You must *never* restrict a bird's water, ever!.
Put the drinking bottle next to her water and hhope for the best,
otherwise, make sure there are no perches above the water pot and change the
water daily, which you should be doung in any case. I tried the water bottle
thing with all my birds and not one of them took to the bottle. It is no
hardship to supply fresh clean water daily as it is all part of my routine.

A simple "not a good idea" would have been sufficient.

Not necessarily.  The truth is you must *never* restrict a bird's water,
ever!  Just saying not a good idea is a weak statement and newbies can
decide it *is* a good idea, then you have a dead bird.  Try to grow some
thicker skin man

No it wouldn't. An explanation of WHY it's "not a good idea" is much more
informative and effective.

Here is what I did. I had the same problem but was too stupid to notice
until my one 'tiel dove into my  teacup and came up gargling
repeatedly...LOL

I took the coloured ball of the drinking tube and shoved it into the 'teils
face until he got pissed off and took a poke at it. Later I did the same
thing with him in his cage and then hung it on it's hanger. He went right
over and is now an educated drip tube drinker.

whenever people buy birds from me i tell them not to buy water
bottles... i prefer my birds to be able to splash around whenever they
like. just position the cup where it's not going to get pooped in. i've
never had a problem. water needs changed everyday regardless.

Yes quit trying to get her to die of thirst.  Not all birds take to a
bottle.   You are only stressing her out.   Clean the water source as
needed.   Would you keep water from a child if it made a mess everytime?
good lord it's getting to be SUMMER!

THAT's Why there is problems on this list...looking for info is one thing
but being completely clueless is quite another.

No, I think the problem I'm seeing is that twice I've been yelled at here
for following someone else's instructions (the manufacturer's), which I
dutifully pointed out in my post.

Did I say I removed all the water?  No, I said I gradually reduced the
amount.  And I get called clueless to boot.

Good God, you people are militant.  I'll go elsewhere for help, thank you.

There is always that "moron" element in every newsgroup where nobody has to
face their adversary. Many of these children know much about birds but
cannot relate to humans very well. It is a sad state of affairs (Marco and
Steve) but there is a few good pointers once you block out the garbage that
rants and name calls.

Best of luck to you.

Apart from the need to see your name on usenet PG, why did you bother
posting? You never actually gave any advice did you?
Pizza Gurl - 19 May 2004 03:03 GMT
I gave useful information without degrading comments to the asker.

Nope, no militant's here... just people trying to give good advice...
and people that care A LOT for their birds :-)

Could you please let us know the manufacturer of the water bottle who gave
such bad advice so that those of us that actually know something about birds
can email them and lobby them to  stop them giving out advice which may kill
birds.
PLease don't in future look for avian advice from a company which after all
is only a bottle making company and not a company of avian vets or experts.
If you needed advice about taking your pet bird on a journey, would you ask
people who keep birds or go to your local car mechanic and ask him for
advice about birds?
Pizza Gurl - 19 May 2004 03:05 GMT
She did ask the group. Can you not read past your hatred of your fellow bird
keeper?
