Why is it when I come on here to read some information about Cockatiels.
Every thread I come across there is an argument, totally unrelated to the
thread! If someone says something stupid, just ignore it and carry on in the
topic, don't bother starting an argument in the thread. I have to trail
through so many arguments to find a post on topic, related to the original
thread!
Grow up everyone, please!

Welcome to Usenet    };^)>  While I sympathise, trying to get others to
behave according to your expectations is an exercise in futility.  As
someone on another group says,  No likee, no clickee.  If that doesn't work
for you, the killfile is a useful tool for eliminating off topic posters.
It doesn't take too long to get things more to your liking.  Just go to

Hmm you were complaining about off topic posts and bitching. Yet here you
are posting off topic and bitching about off topic and bitching posts.

Its what usenet is all about, everyone can and do have thier own opinion,
its when someone disagrees or is outright plain stupid, sh.t hits the fan
and certain posters cant resist the urge to tell someone to shut up or you
dont know blah blah blah, its a vicious circle, it can be quite
entertaining. Peace

You want a laugh? Here ya go.
I have a little collie cross dog named 'Timothy' who came in a litter at 2
weeks old which I fostered for a friend. Timmys bum fell out (rectal
prolapse) which I fixed, he was the runt and I  worked hard at helping him
to live, then he got demodectic mange. He is healthy now but failry
submissive. He loves me. If I call him to me and ask him to sit for a
petting, he sits like a good boy. If I then stand in front of him and bend
down to fuss him, he gets so excited he makes pipi. Trouble is, as he is
sitting, his 'winky' is pointing right at my feet. Each time I pet him, I
end up with warm wet toes :0(
I daren't ask him to lay down for a fuss as his 'winky' will be pointing
straight up. I have to say that I have the softest cleanest toes around with
all the washing I have to do after I pet 'Timfey' :0))

You have a submissive dog that is so intimidated by you that it pees.
WOW!!! Bravo for you.
How long have you been longing to tell us that useless little bit of
irrelevant to anything piece of crap?

You don't know much about dogs do you?? Timothy is submissive because he
was the runt. Way down in the pack order right from the start. He is even
scared of the little lhasa apso I  have.

Nobody forced you to read it did they? How odd that reading my posts raises
your blood pressure, and yet you feel compelled to read anyway. Must be my
animal magnetism and your weak willpower.

He is still intimidated by you and pees to prove it.  The reason is not
relevant unless you think that I was implying that it was your fault.

Yes, I read it.  In fact, I read it and didn't even complain about having to
read it did I.  I gave my opinion regarding the quality and value of the
story.  Nothing more.  Why are you so defensive? and why didn't you answer
my question?

could never part with them. (shrug)

I had to add that I had a Doberman/German Shepard mix. We got her when
she was a puppy. Whenever we would come home she would run circles
around us then lay down and want her belly rubbed. If she were outside
in her dog house and if there were a storm coming she would peek her
head out of the dog house and bark at us. Once the storm was closer
thats all the warnings she would give us. She hated storms. These were
just a few of the goofy things she used to do. She died of old age in
December 2001, she was 15 years old. I don't want another dog right
now because I got too attached to her, but maybe someday we will think
about another. Just thought I would share that :-)

Welcome to the sad, strange world that is alt.pets.parrots.cockatiels.

I'm afraid quite a few people on here are bereft of the social skills and
manners found elsewhere, even on usenet, so you have two choices.

1.  Go elsewhere for your Cockatiel information.
2.  Stay around and enjoy parrot-owning misfits of the world insulting each
other (which can actually be quite amusing)!

:-)

F. O. A. D.

But that is just my opinion.  Which I can express any way, place, or time i
feel like it.  Just like you pissed out an opinion to start this thread.
If you've been here before and know how things are and don't like them, why
come back?  What makes you comeback even though you have to waste so much of

I was thinking this was a place for friendly cockatiel owners to get
together and share their cockatiel experience in a friendly manner. No one
at all seems friendly here!!
It was wrong posting a new thread to complain, but I was just trying to
offer some peace and maybe let people see that it was just turning into a
bitching board and is putting off new posters for coming here. I maybe
thought someone would at least say 'I know what you mean' but I was wrong,
you all seem to stick together like glue and are a tight knit family of
bastards. I shall leave you in peace to bitch and moan about this post.

Actually no - you want St. Joan's home for sensitive bird owners...
It's on yahoo-groups (called cockatiel breeders?).
She'll give you a cup of tea and a bikky then you can join their circle and
sing kumbaya.
Don't expect to learn any useful information there though.

>No one at all seems friendly here!!

That's not true at all - you just have to get to know us. For example when I
first came here, I thought Old Molly was a nasty, evil old bitch (sorry Pam,
but you do do a good job of sending out that impression). But once you get
to know her you will realise that under it all, she has a heart of gold and
a true animal lover and if I needed to know something, I would rather be
told off by OM, knowing that I was getting told what I needed to hear, than
made to feel good and warm and fuzzy, whilst receiving no useful information
to help my bird.

> It was wrong posting a new thread to complain

>a true animal lover and if I needed to know something, I would rather be
>told off by OM, knowing that I was getting told what I needed to hear, than
>made to feel good and warm and fuzzy, whilst receiving no useful information
>to help my bird.

I have been reading this group for several months and would like to
know what useful info you have seen in here?

I don't think I've seen a lot that would be considered useful. OM's
standard reply is..."moron, what would you do if it was a sick child,
get it to an avian vet now moron". I think that is not only useless
info but also dangerous advice. Avian vets don't want people rushing
in unannounced with sick birds, many bird diseases are highly
contagious and they may have several healthy birds in there for check
ups or nail trimming. And telling someone off who is asking for advice
just makes them (and others reading the group) less likely to seek
help in the future and is therefore putting birds at risk (IMHO). The
rest of the traffic in here just appears to be flame wars between the
regulars or unintelligible waffle eg. the person who puts a quote mark
in front of his/her reply making it hard to distinguish the reply from
what he/she is replying to.

My news server sucks (thank you primus) and only seems to pick up
about 75% or so of the traffic in here so I am willing to stand
corrected.

Plenty if you open your eyes.
I know there is alot of garbage and pointless BS - but it's usenet.
If you ignore the threads like THIS ONE, and read the sensible posts, you
usually find there are plenty of sensible answers.

Unfortunatley, there is a troll or two in here and he/she/they have managed
to bring the group down to alot of pointless rubbish, but there are also the
hypocrites in here who start threads like this one, full of pointless
rubbish about people posting pointless rubbish.

Go figure :-P

Anyway if you can't deal with it, you know what to do....

You're right, usenet is what it is and I can deal with it just fine. I
like a good flame as much as anyone but I can't understand abusing or
belittling someone who is asking for advice.

I love birds and hate to see them mistreated and a lot of cases of
mistreatment is ignorance. So if someone comes asking for advice that
might just make a bird happier and healthier why chase them away?

John

Nobody is chasing anyone away. But you have to admit, there have been some
really stupid questions here. Such questions need to be dealt with bluntly.
Stick around a bit longer and you'll see what I'm talking about. I
understand your point of view completely - beleive me. I used to think some
of the responses to questions where quite rude and nasty - but after being
here for awhile now and seeing some of the negligent and just plain stupid
and ignorant postings that have come up, I understand why the people who are
passionate about their birds react the way they do to people who have no
idea how to care for their pets. It really frustrates you sometimes.

I'm sorry if I offended you at any stage John, I know there are some
complete A-holes here. Hopefully you don't think I am one of them.

Ya, that's the ticket.

Hello Mark,

>Nobody is chasing anyone away. But you have to admit, there have been some
>really stupid questions here. Such questions need to be dealt with bluntly.

I couldn't disagree more. Unless it's a ridiculous post from a troll
no question is stupid. The basic questions are probably the most
important. If someone is abused for asking a question that appears
obvious to experienced bird keepers they are unlikely to ask for
advice again which may well endanger a bird.

My neighbour has a cockatiel and when I 1st moved here it was kept in
a very small cage and fed exclusively on sunflower seed. I got to know
them, lent them a larger cage, explained why a diet of sunflower seeds
will kill him, showed them which grass seeds were safe to give him,
showed them how to handle him, showed them how much he enjoyed a
shower etc. He's now on a nutritious diet, kept in a decent sized cage
and gets plenty of out of cage time. If I had of gone over there
calling them morons and abusing them they would have turfed me out and
the bird would still be living in misery. They are decent people and
were not being deliberately cruel, they just didn't know. The real
criminals are the breeders and pet shops who sell birds to people who
lack the knowledge to care for them properly.

>I'm sorry if I offended you at any stage John, I know there are some
>complete A-holes here. Hopefully you don't think I am one of them.

Not at all, I was just curious about your statement regarding all the
helpful info in here. There's really only one person in here that
annoys me and it isn't you.

What's bigpond like at picking up the newsgroups? My ISP is basically
just a re-seller for primus and their news server sucks. It only seems
to pick up between 50 and 75% of the messages in most of the
newsgroups I read which makes it difficult to participate. As soon as
the contract is up I'm moving.

That's the real trick - knowing when somebody is trolling. I've been caught
a couple of times :-)

I know. And I don't endorse some of the childish name-calling and ridicule
that goes on here (Some of it I do, if it is directed towards some people
that shall remain nameless <evil grin> ). But you have to remember that its
usenet and its going to happen. You'll get used to it after awhile and
you'll be able to sift through the rubbish and still get on topic stuff.
Pics of people's birds, advice on breeding etc. It still gets posted. Some
of the threads below have been fine...

>The real
> criminals are the breeders and pet shops who sell birds to people who

Yeah I know what you mean. Some are just plain negligent - expecially some
of the pet shops.

I wouldn't recommend Bigpond at all unfortunately. They continually have
problems and if I wasn't locked into a contract I wouldn't be with them. I
was thinking of switching to Optus...but I don't know - maybe I'm just hard
to please, and maybe the others aren't any better. Not sure...

So what should people do with sick birds? That's what vets are for.

Let them die and then go to St. Joan's home for sensitive bird owners on
yahoo for a pat on the back and a "Oh it's okay, birds just die, you didn't
do anything wrong, you're special!" <sings> "Koom ba yar my lord, koom ba

Quarantine the sick bird to try and stop the disease spreading and
stop it being picked on.

Provide warmth, 27- 33 celcius. Having a hospital cage is a good idea
that way the 1st 2 tasks can be accomplished in a few minutes.

Ring the veterinarian clinic, describe the problem then follow the
advice of the vet or the staff. Not much point rushing off to the
clinic without calling 1st, the vet may not be there or if they
suspect a contagious disease they may want to clear the clinic 1st or
they may prefer to visit you.

There are 2 vets where I live, 1 is a general (cat and dog) vet, the other
an avian vet. Both practises work on a turn up and treat basis, no
appointments.

I agree with John there - rushing off to the vet's at the first sign of
anything wrong is not neccesarily the best course of action.
(Unless of course it is an obvious emergency).

Ray,

WHAT in that posting is/was offensive???  It looks more like a plea for
people not to engage in the fighting/bickering/insulting/etc. that almost
always results when someone honesty tries to ask a question, or to give
advice.

One the side you end up with people "chidding" the poster for asking
"stupid" questions and "wasting peoples time" with stupid/dumb question.
Then you get other people "attacking" the ones who attacked the poster
saying things like "there's no such thing as a dumb question."  Then it
degenerates into name calling, insults, etc., etc., etc., etc. . .

Let's face it. This group is a complete wreck because of basically one nasty
old bitch, troll that ruins every noobie's first visit. She is emotionally
and verbally backed by the group of hyena / jackasses that also exist here.
This doesn't work in any NG.

The only solution here is to make sure noobies don't get involved here with
cockatiels right away so they don't get a false sense of security. Insult
them promptly and do your part of the job. Why let your ideals fall down
now? Are you getting soft or just in the head?

Now SUFO with your crazy cockatiel group ideas, idiot!

Why are you adding to this crap dc? Do you feel the need to protect the

Ray,

I'm not tring to "protect" anyone.  What I saw was what I took to be a
plea from people to try and be polite to one another, and not resort to
the typical name calling, bickering, fighting, etc., etc., etc.

And sadly you're post here is an example of the name calling, bickering,
fighting, that goes on here.  Why, do you feel the need to assume that I
am "protecting" the oringal poster or "attack" me for agreeing that we
need to put an end to the fighting?
Ray - 26 Mar 2005 13:08 GMT

Why is there a need to end the bickering and fighting? The biggest choice
anyone has is to read or not to read the messages here.
Some people don't have the brains to ignore posts, they read every message
then bitch about them. When you agree with someone complaining about off
topic posts you add to that thread which makes you just as bad as the
original poster.
Pizza Girl - 26 Mar 2005 18:10 GMT
