I have a female Pearl cockatiel who is 10 y/o.  She has never had a male
tiel for company, but just recently she has begun acting like she's "in
heat".  That's the only way I can describe it.  She also shreds the paper in
the bottom of her cage and then sits on it like it's a nest.  No eggs.

Is this normal after this length of time?  I have pored over the only 2
books I have on cockatiels, and although they do talk about nesting, this
type of behaviour is not mentioned.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Well smartass, I didn't get a decent response by being polite, so shove it.

I'm the polite one around here (usually), but I don't know sh.t about
nesting and that's why I didn't answer you.  You want some polite f.cking
advice or do you want correct advice.... The people on this list have been
here a long time and know their sh.t.  They're not going to answer a
question asked by somebody just popping in.  You want to get some good
f.cking advice, suck it in and stick around.... and develop a f.cking sense
of humor.  Otherwise, go blow.

That bird is stark raving normal.  I have two parrots, a female
bronzewing pionus (never been with a male) that likes to climb into
dark spaces and tear up paper, and a male red-vented cockatoo (former
breeder) that likes to tear up just about anything, but especially
paper in dark spaces.

I don't consider this a problem with my birds, but many people do
report that their birds tend to bite when people come near their
nesting areas.  If that's a problem, consider getting rid of (or
blocking access to) the nest.

Thank you very much for your answer.  I do appreciate it, and it's nice to
know there is someone on this ng that actually posts about birds, rather
than spending their time calling other posters names.  I used to read this
ng a lot a number of years ago, when it was pleasant reading.

While sitting on her nest my bird hisses and makes like she'll bite, but she
never does.  I just leave her alone in her little corner, and talk to her
once in a while.  She'll sometimes spend the whole evening on her nest, then
climb up to her sleeping perch and go to bed.

why should you care that you brought it on yourself?  You wanted to cause a
problem.  You asked a question and someone pointed to a place to look for
answers.  Getting all pissy because the answer was not fed to your herpes

turned out to be something similar to what you are bitching about says even
more.

Thanks - but I have better things to do with my time than deal with a
"flaming ng".  I'd rather spend my time on ng's that don't bother with such
childish behaviour.  When I first lurked here a while ago, it seemed that
98% of the posts were gibberish, so why would I spend my time wading through
crap?   I waited quite a while to ask my question - I got my answer, and I
appreciate your polite reply as well.  I have no patience with people that
think because you've asked a question you haven't Googled first.  I thought
ng's were for discussion, but if the criteria here is Google first, wait til
you've been here year before you can participate - bleah - no thanks.

But he still obviously doesn't see the whole pattern.

Maybe you should look up the word 'nobby' then tell us you made an error and
actually meant 'knobby' even though that goes against the pattern and would
cause your post to make no sense at all.  Nice try though.

Oh but wait a minute! Apparently you'd googled it first.......AND you've

So you WOULD fit the criteria.....

Then why didn't you have a f.cking clue that there was absolutely nothing
odd about your birds behavior?

Yes she is, her hormones are awake and she wants to build a nest, dont rub
down her back she can lay without a male, I would get her a male, she would
probaly love you for it, if you dont want chicks, limit the daylight to 10
hours, if they do mate get them a box and when she lays boil the eggs and
put them back and let them tire of them. If you cant do that then let them
hatch and sell the babys.

Hmm like there aren't enough parent reared tiels in the world. What about
the real risk of egg binding and the fact that while she is busy nesting she
might not want to be a pet. There is nothing wrong with managing a female
tiel without getting her a male . It isn't cruel.
Why do you imagine "she would love you" for getting a male? Please don't
anthropomorphise.

I say that from our personal experiences, and just for a simple fact that
species get along with thier own kind, you can have a distraught bird and
put it with another and watch a transformation, we have done it, and you and
your egg binding, you worry too much, I didn't say it was cruel, I meant if
the hen sees a male and its the only one around its only a matter of time,
common sense there. Boy thats a big word there, how about yes I can do that,
geez I dont know, I guess its called SEX, all species do it, and how about
bonding or friendship, look up a definition before you preach not to do
something.

But 2 hens would get on equally well, provide each other with companionship
and not end up with more cockatiels.

(smile) - she's not going to get a male... no way.  My DH has a coop full of
racing homer pigeons with lots of babies.  That's enough birdy babies in
this family.   When she's not "nesting" she seems to love me just fine.
Another little thing she does that I forgot to mention - when she's sitting
on her "nest", she sometimes rocks back and forth (side to side).  Right now
she's playing in an empty box here in the computer room with me.

That's right!  If the owner doesn't even want a man (read as dike), why
should her 'tiel.

I doubt you have any education at all, judging by the severe antisocial

It's a wonder you weren't institutionilised as a juvenile delinquent.
