Can anyone tell me how much food to feed my two cockatiels daily? Luke &
Leia (named by my Star Wars obsessed teenagers), to my untrained eye seem to
be the picture of health. They are active, alert, playful and vocal. I just
want to make sure I'm caring for them correctly. They are young adults 1-1/2
years old that we adopted in early October.

I currently feed them 1/4 cup a day (60 ml) & replenish their food supply
every day. Some days, there is food left in the feeder & other days there
are just seed husks left. Is this enough food daily?

Secondly, I sprinkle their mixture with a little Nekton-S. The spoon that
comes in the jar is 1g. This seemed way to much to me so I've been
sprinkling a small amount picked up on the spoon handle, about what you'd
use adding pepper or salt to your food. Is this enough?

Thanks in advance for your replies and advice.

Fill the feed pot and next day, blow off the husks and top up.They need to
have food available all the time.
Why are you adding this nekton stuff? what is it supposed to do?

Thank you all for the advice. Nekton-S is a vitamin supplement for caged
birds. The woman who I adopted the birds from recommended it. We have a
bird-only pet shop with a very good reputation in Westchester NY, not very
far from where I live. They recommended using the supplement also.

Never trust a recommended product by someone who sells it :-)
I mistrust additives. A decent diet is all they need. Supplements are
generally uneccessary unless they are breeding, or have been ill.

Just fill up the seed container, and every second day (if not every day),
blow the husks off the top and just top it up....no need to measure it,
you're not feeding a fish lol....

Don't forget fresh fruit and veggies. Mine also enjoy boiled eggs mashed
up, mash pototoes, brown rice, whole wheat noodles, multigrain bread etc...

The birds can eat some human foods also.  My bird loves popcorn, lima beans,
peas, rice, potato, nuts, Cheerios, Wheaties & Great Grains cereals.  Birds will
pick out the seed that they like to eat best and leave the rest.  I give my
cockatiel an extra teaspoon of seed for this reason.  They also will devour
millet.
