I have a question i'm hoping you guys could help me out with.  I have
a yellow face hen that is a year old.  She has a fixation on chewing
things and seems to do nothing else but chew.  She seems happy and
will stop for attention like food or a scratch on the head.  She has a
scab under her tongue that was checked and treated by a vet specialist
but never went away.  She doesn't seem irritated by the scab and I
have even thought this could be from the chewing habit.  She and her
cage mate have a lot of space in their home and have a variety of
toys, food and people to entertain them so I wouldn't think it would
be from boredom.  I thought maybe this is normal behaviour for a
young, happy bird, but she is very determined to chew and looks crazy
while doing so.  She chews everything in site including her cage mate.
Does anybody have any opinions/suggestions on this?  Thanks very much.

All Cockatiels love to chew. There is nothing wrong with it.

Yes but she chews *constantly*, to the exclusion of all other
activities.  She doesn't usually even like having her neck petted
since it interferes with her chewing obsession.  And this goes on for
her entire waking life and she even seems to chew on things during the
night.

Can anyone please advise?  Thanks in advance!

It can be a sign of pain. Take her back to the vet for a full blood work up.

First things first - rename her "Chewbacca". lol
Seriously though, you should take her back to the vet to get the scab
checked over again - just to be on the safe side. Also, it would be a good
idea to get a blood test taken to see if there is anything wrong there. (i
think Pam says this below) chewing can mean that something else is bothering
them....

Thanks for your responses.  We're going to take the bird for some
tests and bloodwork.

Thanks again.
