My tiels beak has a problem which seems to be getting worse. It is growing
thicker on the left lower side. It's not causing her any problems but
obviously we would like to find out what we should do about it. I would be
grateful for any advise.

regards

Hi Norman,
to be sure you should consult a vet - there are a lot of reasons why it
might be happening:
first it could be a kind of malfunction of the beak (using one side more
than the other) or an unknown accident which causes a "not-balance" of the
beak,
it could also be a problem of nutrition (missing minerals, vitamins)
or it could be a problem with b.e. the liver and last but not least it could
be mites (but normally it starts at the top of the beak nearby the nose).
If the bird is not handicapped there is normally no reason to do anything
like equalizing the beak if you watch it carefully - but only a vet can make
a diagnosis and I suggest to let him have a look on the tiel - for your own
"surety".

We had a similar problem with a tiel we had. Our bird was elderly. Our vet
suggested that it was liver function problems but couldn't confirm that
without tests. We never had the tests done. Instead, the vet literally took
wire cutters to trim and shape the beak. After watching that, we were able
to do it ourselves. Unfortunately, the bird passed away (albeit quietly,
peacefully) a few months after that vet visit. He is greatly missed.
