I got a beautiful cockatiel in Nov.  He is great with me and loves to spend
all his time out of the cage.  He has started biting anyone else who gets
near him.  How can I stop this.  Also can anyone reccomend a good, basic
book  that deals with training.  This is our first bird and we want to
make sure we do things right.

Thank you

Doing things right starts before you buy the bird, not after the behavioral
problems become a problem due to the fact that you had no clue how to do
things right.

Anthony,

Just ignore Zach Q., he's a trolling c**t who's only after attention. Sad
lonely geyser.

I think the "Dummies" range has a good book out on the subject of Tiels...
"Cockatiels for Dummies" (I'm not being a smart arse or calling you a dummy,
that's just the name of the book).
I'm sure there are others as well. Do a Google search or maybe check out
amazon.com or your local book shop.

Breed him.

Use a condom.

I  had the same problem with one of ours, it is bonding to you, have
whomever else always have its fav treat or toy in hand when they are near
and lots of patience and a little bit of you out of the birds sight when
others are trying to be social with the bird, patience, patience, patience
and time. Good luck :-)

Unfortunately others do not "own" the bird and want it put down 'cause it
bit them. (poor babies)

Maybe the bird feels threatened.  Birds use their beaks to get to know people
and things.  Since they can't reach out with a hand like we do, they use their
beak to explore the world around them by tasting and chewing.

Even after nine years with my cockatiel, there are days when he just does not
want to be bothered.  He feels threatened by fingers, he must think of them as
snakes.
Their moods will vary when they are molting & during nesting/mating.  Beware of
the hissing for that is a sure sign he is saying "Don't mess with me!"

Hehehe tell me about it.
Rouge is hissing this morning and sitting on his "nest", rushing over to
pick a fight when I walk past.
Little bugger. Best to leave them be when they are in these moods.

What would that information change? Hmmm, let me think..... If he knew
it was me, he wouldn't have said that in the first place..

Whether it was said or not it's validity remains.

I have not experienced that with a Tiel of ours. Never let anyone put their
hands inside his cage. He probably is scared. Make sure other people
approach him slowly and that they do not try to point their fingers at him
but instead have them try the step up command. Also go to one of the Tiel
websites that have great information on behavior.

http://www.cockatiels.org/articles/library.html
http://www.cockatiel.com/

If you thing your Tiel bites you should see my Quaker, but that is their
nature if they are strongly bonded to one person [me]. Moses does not just
bite, he clamps on like a vicegrips but people don't believe it until they
stupidy try besides my warnings. I have two nicknames for him - the flying
Pit Bull and the flying garbage disposal but he is my buddy and God help the
person that tries to lay a hand on me while he is nearby.   --- Steve
