Yesterday my BIL was at my house and was saying how he has a friend
that has a couple of parrots - he thinks they are cockatiels and one
of the birds had fallen (somehow) and broken a leg. I asked him if
they took him to the Vet and he said No - I then said that the bird
needs to be taken to the Vet - then I asked him how was the bird, he
said he just sits at the bottom of the cage - Okay, I know who these
people are and I think they won't take the bird to the Vet either. If
I want to report them (which I want to), who would I call? and I want
to make my name anonymous - Thanks

Go see them again and look at the birds leg, can it hold it up on its own?,
does it resist when you move it? Good signs if so.If not see if you can see
bruising or if the leg moving in ways it should not. If its not just
dangling and flopping it may not be broke, if you cant see bruising, pluck
the feathers from its leg, if you never seen a broken one you will know if
it is, and it will be black and blue and yellow colored with swelling, if
thats the case it NEEDS a vet, its leg will have to be plucked,(unless you
did it) aligned and taped, if it just sprained, a box with water and food,
no perches and a healthy week of rest or more depending on how flighty the
bird is will most likely heal it. In some, it may need to be taped, if you
have never done it, dont,.. you can cause more harm than good..

I didn't see the bird at all, I was told about the bird. Are you
kidding about going to these people's house? LOL! I didn't mention
these people are always doing drugs/getting drunk, and the wife,
Whoa!! she's a lunatic!! I could have someone that does go to their
house check the bird - I still think they should be reported to
animal cruelty. What has me wondering is how the hell did the bird
get hurt in the first place? I am sure the bird IS neglected.

Sounds like they need reporting to the RSPCA (I dunno what you guys call
that in the US).....
Hope they don't have kids.....

They DO have kids, but they are older.

The ASPCA here. I am thinking I wouldn't mind being called the "town
bitch" so I should report them. I can't waste much more time on this.
I just hope the little guy isn't in pain.

Would you consider asking these people to release the bird to you so you
can take it to the vet yourself?  You can tell them the bird the bird
will probably never get any better and that you are willing to take care
of it.  Chances are they don't want it any more.

You can then decide what to do afterward when a vet has completed an exam.

Agreed with a twist. Tell them you know how to look after this bird, you
have an isolation cage etc.. Then take the bird to the vet, get records and
tell them to pay the bill because it is registered to you now as the care
taker.

Explain it to the vet, after treatment (they may refuse as you are not the
owner??) , and get docs in place.

Of course their is always being the bitch of the town. Tough one LT.

Best of luck and our hopes are with you on this one.

Actually this is an even better idea. This way you don't have to be a total
bitch by reporting them, but the bird still gets to go to your home where it
can be looked after better. I would try this first, but if it doesn't work,
I guess you'll just have to report them.

I called the avian rescue and adoption org. this morning and they are
going to take care of this - it's all confidential between them and
me only, so I don't have to worry. They will be calling me with
updates to let me know whats going on with the bird :-)
