i have 2 cockatiels in a large cage.They are approx 4 years old. A
couple of months ago when we came home the cage was splattered with
blood, obviuosly they had been fighting. They both appeared to be ok but
it was difficult to see where they were hurt.
A few weeks later one of them developed a flesh coloured swelling under
the front of his wing. We thought he may have bruised it and we were not
to concerned. Afew weeks later a small lump appeared on the top surface
of the same wing.
Over the last week the original lump as at least doubled in size. It is
still flesh coloured.
The vet does not know what it is.
He gave it antibotics to try for a week but to no effect.
The bird as 3 lumps now but only the original is enlarged.
The vets says that he will need to remove the lump to see what it is,
but he also states that the bird only has a slim chance of surviving the
operation. The operation will cost around £100.
Has anyone else had this problem.
Do birds survive operations alright.
Should i get a second opinion.
Hoping you can help,
yours Martin

Birds survive just fine if a proper avian vet operates on them. If you take
your bird to a cat,dog and cow vet he will probably manage to kill it.

Did the vet test for salmonella? The problem might be the growth has
a big vien in the middle of it the bird will bleed profusely if it is
cut. Give them something for the salmonella if the vet hasn't checked
for that. It could be ingrown feathers, but I doubt it with two birds
showing the same symptoms. I thought this was the occasion that
we needed a vet's advice. He spent your money and the birds are
still sick. Put them down and buy two more after sanitizing the cage.
