Although some avian vets believe pelleted diets are best, there are many
who disagree. In any event, this is the advice I have followed for
keeping my birds.
My budgie is currently 12+ years old, albeit, he's slowing down... My
tiel is 14 years old and in fine condition. My conures and lovebirds,
all going strong at 8 years of age. I have chosen to offer a variety of
foods and am pleased with the results. I do NOT supplement with
vitamins. I have NOT had to medicate any of my birds for illness or
disease.

I have bought breeders who were plucked and they stated its due to
abuse...... neglect...... breeders just do that..... all kinds of stories.
Most of these birds were on a pelleted diet but some were on a fancier more
expensive diet ... (which was sprayed with vitamins). I make my own feed.
I go to the feed store and buy 50 lb. bags of this and that and blend them
together and make my own. No vitamins sprayed on it, no pelleted diet.
Their feathers grow back in and alas, they were not plucking for the reasons
they thought, their skin was irritated with all the crap sprayed in or
ground into the feed that makes them pluck. I have no pluckers... I have 4
birds fully feathered that were bad pluckers when I got them. Changing
their diet was the trick.

I had a dog a few years back and each time my spouse would feed him a certain
big name dog food he would bite me and be hyperactive. I could tell he was
eating that brand within 15 minute of getting home from work.

How do you know your 14 year old is in fine condition? Have you had any
blood-work done on the bird to see if it's organs are all functoning? And
have you had the birds throat examined to demonstrate any long-term
developmental problems? And have you ever had radiographs (xrays) done to
determine the sizes and locations of the birds organs?
Birds that "appear" to be in fine condition are nature's way of protecting
them from the natural culling process that occurs in the wild. If a bird
"appears" poorly it is picked on so most birds appear ill-off only when it's
probably too late or near to that.

How often do you recommend taking your cockatiel to the vet for a
check up? I use simple obsevation to keep up with my tiels (39 birds)
I don't need a vet to tell me what's wrong with my birds. I know when
and what to give them. If a bird starts to slow down with his eatting
is the time to start wondering what is wrong. I guess you are saying
to take all of my birds for regular check up? That is crazy. Could it
be that she watches her bird and knows it is well? Just becase she
said her 14 year old bird was in fine condition. I just put away a hen
that was a 1988 bird, I went and bought some birds and the person
who owned her eveidently didn't have the heart to kill her loved bird.
She did let it sit there untill it couldn't fly very well. She acted
like she had really givien me somthring. She realy just wanted to do
away with the bird and couldn't do the deed.
