I recently acquired two cockatiels, a male and a female.  The female is very
fat.  She uses the food dish as her perch and just eats nonstop all day.
The people I got her from had only been feeding her seed and that's all.  I
have tried feeding her veggies, egg, etc., but she won't eat it.  She will
only eat seed.   I don't want to remove the seed bowl cuz then the male
won't have any food (he also only eats seed, but not all day long).  Any
suggestions.  I am worried cuz she is so fat.

Put the food dish in only twice a day, morning and early evening when
tiels like to feed most, don't leave it in all day.    Do it in the morning
before you go to work and remove it before leaving the house and
then put it back in at dinner time.    During the day you can leave them
a snack of veggies and fruit.    If they're hungry enough, they'll
eat it.   Spinach leaf is good, grapefruit, apple slices, strawberries
sliced up, melons (not watermelon).

Two cages?
Get the female out for a fly around everyday and get her some aerobic exercise.
In a few months she should thin out.

If your birds are babies, it could also be "baby fat" that some 'tiels
have until they get a bit older.  Food intake will decrease after about
a year or so.

If you are going to remove food from the cage, make absolutely certain
you do not forget to put it back.

Also, get the biggest cage you can afford.  Big enough for your birds to
flap their wings.  Ebay has nice flight cages with stand and wheels for
about $100-$120 including shipping.  (I purchased two myself and I love
them.)  Bigger cage = more exercise when you are not around to let them out.

Good luck.

She's about a year old.  Maybe that's it.  Although she never leaves the
food dish.  When the male wants to eat, he has to push her off to get in
there.

You may regret feeding them only seed in the long run. Seed is mostly stored
(not active) carbohydrates and is a disatrious "diet" for birds.

You must get them a balanced pellet food, (sometimes the smaller ones for
smaller birds is easier to get them to start eating them because of the
similarity to seed and because it won't simply just break in two pieces and
fly across the room when they bite it.

Since fatty is so "fat" as you say don't worry about her "preferences" (or
rather your preference for supplying her with it)....use feeding time as a
"play" time and get them out of the cage and use the pellets as an
interacting event with the birds...indeed pretend to eat the pellets with
them.

Seed sould only be a small portioned "treat" once a day or so. And not where
you simply place a huge bowl full in front of them and walk away.

Other more nutritious items include broccoli sprouts, radish sprouts,
sunflower sprouts, fruits, and cooked meats. Don't feed them alfalpha
sprouts due to their commonly being known to be poisoned with deadly
bacteria. Also avoid avacodo and celery by the way...

Cockatiels in the wild live on seeds and never get
pellets.
My cockatiel would starve to death before he will eat
pellets.

Humans, some apes, and guinea pigs are the only animals
that have problems with chloresterol and circulation
problems.
With more exercise, high caloric intake is not a
problem. My 'tiel gets seeds only, flys around the
house every day or so and is underweight at 3 years
old, according to Vet visits. He will not go near
vegetables or fruit. He is afraid of them.

What do tiels eat in the wild? (pellets from the pellet tree)?
You are not qualified to tell people what they should feed their birds. Keep
your OPINIONS to yourself before someone listens to you and kills their bird

Keep your stupid opinions to youreself you ugly bitch.

You are not qualified to tell people what to post or
think

Are you too stupid or immature to disagree with
something without being a complete a.shole? As all here
can plainly see you lack the maturity to post here.

What helpful information have you ever posted here? I
see you are back for more bashing, so rightly deserved.

People like you are what most call the "scum" of
Usenet. Go back outside to your bird cage with your
birdbrain and lock the f.cking door. Learn something
from your birds and stay there.

Go away.

ive converted all my birds 2 roudy bush pellets.
they love them.
they also get plenty of fruit & vegies.
birds commonly suffer from obesity & vitamin & mineral deficiencies due
to seed based diets.
my lories love pellets too. less risk of yeast infections that prone to
due to high sugar diets.
Pizza Girl - 04 Dec 2005 03:37 GMT
What plant grows these "roudy bush pellets" that are so
good for 'tiels? I have never heard of a roudy bush?
Are the pellets a fruit, berry or a vine type seed?

Pellet food is okay, but Cockatiels need to eat more than seed and pellets.
They can eat table food such as: peas, corn, lima beans, rice, noodles,
potatoes, broccoli, popped popcorn, and whole grain cereals.  My bird loves
Cheerios and Wheaties (breakfast of Champions).

Oh yes, an occasional salt-free peanut is good for them.  Too much salt can
cause kidney damage.

My cockatiel weighs in at 8 ounces and he is 11 years old.  He eats well.

You have got to be kidding about a pellet diet, right? Some of us don't
recommend pellets - Seeds are the way to go!!!

OMG! Seed that's ALL?!!!  LMAO!!! Thats what they eat in the wild so
eating seed isn't making her fat - have you taken her out of her cage at
least once a day so she can get some exercise and do some flying?
