I thought I'd ask for some ferret advice... my female ferret has an
ugly looking sore on her leg - have any idea what could cause that?
It looks like an ulcer of some kind... <sob sob sob> She is still
frisky and wants to play, but draws back quickly if something touches
the leg by accident.

Take her to a vet asap and don't touch her leg! :o)

Tyler....it doesn't really matter what caused it. I could guess maybe
scratching her skin raw and it got infected?
Regardless, even though she is still frisky it obviously bothers her
constantly...just more when it gets touched. I'll bet you she even wakes up
constantly with an ache there.
I agree completely with Paula. Get her to a vet right away that knows about
ferrets. Chances are, a simple salve prescription will heal this up fairly
quickly and give you back a totally happy, healthy ferret.
Since you wrote here (rather than taking her to a vet to start with), I'm
guessing money might be an issue. The visit plus prescription will probably
cost you about $100 (based on my area). Spend the money! It will be
well-spent to make your friend feel great again!

I know money can be an issue but when you take any animal in be it ferret,
cat, dog, or whatever you have a responsibility to take care of them. They
need you and depend upon you.
Take her to the vet asap.

Do everything you can go get your little friend to the vet ASAP. Ferrets are
small animals and infections can spread quick if not taken care of. It may
also be a skin tumor. Please take a look at this link as in might be
possible what you are looking at is in fact a skin tumor. Good news is most
skin tumors in ferrets are benign but if not treated properly can become
malignant. In any case you really need to get your ferret into the vet. His
or her life may depend on it. Troy

Ah, thank you! That was exactly the type of info I was looking for.
It is indeed very tumor-looking, and this article seems to confirm
that.
And I do have a vet appt, but not until next week. Plus, I am
convinced that doctors of any stripe are not omniscient - I like to
know about issues and understand them as much as possible. I prefer
to see doctors as acting as medical consultants, not dictators.
That's only possible if I am not ignorant of what's going on :)

T: While you are at it, be sure to tell the vet what kind of feed the
fuzzie is getting. Hopefully you have selected some knowledgeable about
ferrets. My last trip to the vet was for a loss of hair on the lower back.
He took a blood sample and tested for adrenal disease (came back negative),
but he did ask me to switch from 8in1 Ultimate to Totally Ferret. Within a
week the hair started growing back and is now normal again. Sometimes poor
diet can cause skin problems and, Lord knows, some of the dry ferret food
for sale in pet stores is nutritionally deficient. - CW

Thanks for this info. I'm assuming that "Totally Ferret" is a good food
since your vet recommended it and switching to it solved a problem.
Right now, my ferrets eat a mix of two kinds. I'll look for that next time I
goto the pet store (probably tomorrow) and add that to the mix to slowly
introduce them to it.
