Do you have sand substrate which is being stirred up by the critters in the tank and clogging it? When you turn off the filter, for servicing, is there a "back flush of crud" which is being spewed from the filter back into the tank, and the cleaned filter sucks this up? Are you washing out the filter pads sufficiently?

A brand new set up *should* only have a couple small fish in it (if using fish to cycle the tank - and there are better methods these days to cycle without fish), so there shouldn't be enough gunk on the filter media to be washing off after only 2 weeks.

Why are you cleaning out the filter (what type are we talking about) when the tank's only been running for 2 weeks now? What size tank is this? What type of fish are in it and how many of each. Type of filter.
In order to better help you, we need this missing information.

I have searched dictionaries, psychiatric tomes and thesis's for a description of the mental disorder this pitiful individual(s) suffers from--I cannot find one.
When ones' whole world has been reduced to worthless displays of angry and vile verbiage and suffers the disdain, rebuke, pity and arrows of others just for a bit a negative attention, what do you call it?
When ones whole world lies in a tiny shoe box meant to hold the shoes of a tiny/petite woman ... it makes the heart bleed for such an individual ...
The aspect of the mental disorder which causes boasts of accomplishment derived from such actions boggles the mind. It makes one realize that this individual has never, in his pathetic lifetime ever accomplished anything more notable, indeed, quite obviously never will ...
How do we allow such people in such dire grips of mental disorder(s) to go about suffering in such angry agony? Is he some wino with a wine bottle in a gutter with a laptop? Is he some un-bathed and unshaven individual with a backpack sitting at a computer in a library with a librarian spraying scented aerosols behind him for the benefit of other patrons ... is he the stumble bum staggering down skid-row with laptop in hand ... is he a 35 year old idiot living in his aging mothers basement? -- it all makes one imagination race in wonder ... such actions cannot paint a pretty picture ...
The world has a cold heart ... :-(

Tynk - 09 Sep 2008 17:15 GMT I snipped the bullcrap........
Look how much space you both took up in this thread that had nothing to do with the original poster's Q's about their filter.
You jumped the gun with your advice a bit, and that should have been acknowledged by you, and then the necessary Q's asked of the original poster. Everything else should have been ignored.
John Smith - 09 Sep 2008 17:46 GMT > ... > You jumped the gun with your advice a bit, and that should have been > acknowledged by you, and then the necessary Q's asked of the original > poster. > Everything else should have been ignored. Jump the gun? I think not!
You assumed that he began his "new tank" with all new gravel/sand, rocks, etc. I did not ...
I could have looked for other reason a filter would have been "plugged" so quickly, I suppose ... such as the individual forgot and got one of his shirts inserted into it. A marble is stuck in one of the hoses. He is dumping his ashtrays into the tank ...
I took it for granted the individual had more brains than some here and would have noticed such things ... but if you care to insult his intelligence ... go ahead, we'll watch ...

I never insulted the original poster. Re-read it.
The things you asked would not have applied to a 2 week old tank....other than your mention of a possible clog from sand. So yes, you jumped the gun a bit.

A 2 week old tank not have built up gunk that could be back flushed into the tank, and there shouldn't be much of anything on the filter media that would require them to "wash out the filter pads sufficiently". If anything, a quick swoosh in old tank water would suffice. If there's a lot of gunk, then there's a different problem that needs to be fixed. They mentioned it was their first tank. A two week old, first timer tank. Asking the Q's I did in NO way insulted their intelligence. In fact, That information is absolutely required to help them properly. It would appear that you just want to argue. Maybe you're new to posting on a fish forum, or helping folks out online. But there are times when certain information is needed *before* you can give out a proper reply. No one said you're wrong, I said you jumped the gun a little. You're ticked off because of your "shadow". Don't take that out on others.

> <yawn> ... but good luck with your GAY-la event ... :-) Mr. Smith, Are you assuming I am a gay person because my screen name is "Tynk", a shortened / spelling change version of Tink...short for Tinkerbelle....which is a famous fairy (aka Pixie) from Disney? By the way, I am not a gay person. I am a married, mother of 2. I've been a serious hobbyist for the past 30 years. I specialize in Angelfish and Bettas, but have kept most types of fish in this time. I've helped folks out with their fish or tank problems for about 12 years online now, and in person since I was a kid. I don't know who you think you are Mr. Smith, but this is an open forum for all to use. There general steps that are taken when helping somebody online. You aren't at their house, and you can't see their tank or their fish. Certain information is needed before giving an intelligent answer. So far, I have not seen this from you in this particular thread. Mostly, you want to bicker and call names. Why not learn the simple steps needed in order to better help folks out here that want to learn, or need help with their fish. You see I've been doing this long enough to know that if a 2 week old tank is needing a thorough cleaning of the filter media, I don't need to be there to know that there's a much larger issue going on...*WHY* would the filter clogged, and why does it need a good cleaning? A newbie has to learn the cycling process, proper tank maintenance, and the requirements of each fish they may have or want. 98% of the time they've already got the tank, put a bunch of fish in it, and are left with a huge mess. Usually.....it's on the advice of a pet shop employee too! You Mr. Smith, need to learn the right questions, in the right order if you truly want to help folks. Lose your attitude, slow down, and stop the bullshit bickering. It won't stop until you do. It's been going on for many years, with many different folks over the years. If you have the ability to control yourself, and read between the lines (so to speak) of posts left by newbies, you'll provide a good service of helping others out. To continue like you are will only make things worse............for all of us.

All your chit is repetitive ... however, it has grown to ridiculous large amounts of bizarre text which could be summed up in few words--intelligent writers use "economy of words", anything else bores the reader, wastes time and presents the writer as too stupid to condense/focus/clearly-define their thoughts ... read a good book on proper writing habits and get back to me.

ON A 2 WEEK OLD TANK??? No. Nothing you you mentioned, except for a clog from substrate were valid for a 2 week old tank. In 2 weeks there should NOT be enough gunk to block a filter. It doesn't matter that it *may* be useful info for the *future*. There is such a thing as too much information....especially when it comes to newbies in this hobby....which the poster said they were.
