aquarium salt question

I was wondering what the difference between aquarium salt and
supermarket salt was.
I know that Iodide is poisonous to the goldfish so lets exclude
any replies about Iodized table salt.

what concerns me the most is the other variable ingredients found in
supermarket salts and the combinations they come in. I have observed
thatnon iodized Red Cross Table salt does not provide any ingredient
but indicates 590mg sodium for every 1.5g.
and HAIN sea salt "made from evaporated sea water" differs only in
that it indicates two ingredients; SALT,CALCIUM SILICATE(anti caking
agent).
anyway this has got to be the most boring question ever asked but I'm
interested in reading any thoughts.

Well "r",

First of all let me say that the difference is the cost. A pound of
aquarium salt is in the dollars and the price in the supermarket it about 40
cents. You can also buy salt in the grocery store that does not contain any
anti-caking ingredient. Some times this is a few cents more expensive.

And as far as Iodine is concerned you do not know what you are talking
about. Goldfish are not poisoned by it. Anyone that tells you that their
head in the toilet somewhere. In fact, Teleost fish need higher iodine
requirements than humans, but if you want to continue to subscribe to BS, be
my guest. This is truly one of the great urban legends of the aquarium
community, so with that note you should probably stick to purchasing
aquarium salt.

mostly price. and frankly the salt used for water softeners, solar salt CRYSTALS in
plastic bags is very cheap and great. yes. dont get salt with iodine or other
additives. Ingrid

Supermarket salt is NaCl (99%)
Aquarium salt contain less nacl, more CaSO4, Sr and so on
