Hi
I was wondering if 1 clown loach was ok for a tank with goldies in it? (its
a 800L tank)

AFAIK Clown Loaches like higher temps (80f thereabouts), which wouldn't be
that great for the goldies.

Higher temp is also useful in preventing ich, which Clown loaches are
susceptible to.

MY goldies live in 80o Water!

I also believe that clown loaches prefer to be in small schools.  Just one
or two would possibly be very lethargic and uninteresting.  They also grow
quite large. Additionally I believe they prefer rocks or driftwood to hide
in, which may change the way you set up your tank.

I bought four, now I wish I'd bought eight.
They're really interesting and entertaining fish.

I have three of them that I've had about a month.  They are just so
entertaining.  They do always hang out together though.

Starfish,

You are doing a disservice to the clown loach.  Clowns should be keep in
groups no smaller than 4 individuals.

Starfish,

Loaches are a special fish.  The grow slowly, have a personality, and do
great in groups of 5 or 6 or more.  The are a socialable fish with others of
their kind and can grow up to a foot in length if there environment allows.
By the way, they also like water flow.  This can be created simply if you
have a powerfilter with a discharge tube on which you can add tubing to
bring the water flow underwater along a varied level in an aquarium.  The
are also mostly nocturnal.

78 degrees is good for them although, warmer temperatures are better.
Goldfish do better in harder water, and higher pH and Clowns do better in
softer more acid water, so if you keep your water in the middle of pH (7)
and hardness, clowns will be all right, but the do better in different
conditions than Goldfish.

Mine eat everything I put in there!
- Frozen Bloodworms
- Live Blackworms
- Shrimp Pellets
- Tropical Flakes
- Guppy Bites

They really like live foods but do well on a variety like what is put forth
in the accompanying message.  The also like the small red wigglers, the
composting earthworms.

Sounds pretty irresponsable to me. I'd never keep a clown loach with
goldfish! EVER!

Why do you think its a no-go?
I know it sounds shi*house to put them together, but what i saw today was
quite an eye opener. I asked them how they feed him so that the goldfish
dont get his food and they said that they put a little pipe down into the
water at feeding time, drop in bloodworm or whatever in the pipe and to the
goldies and everyone is happy.

Before i saw this i was soooo against putting anything with goldfish...mind
you I was exaggerating when i said "tank full" of goldies......its like a
800L with 4 goldies and an old clown loach...i couldnt believe my
eyes...there was plenty of hiding spaces for him and he even came up to me
and he looked like he wiggled his nose at me.

I thought it was very weird and i was angry at the lfs for a while. Then i
asked then why the clown was there...Hes been there for years with the same
fish and all the fish are the same size,,,

I dont know...

I think it would be the temp. If you have good filtration, I do triple
for a goldfish the other thing would be temp. I have my Clown at 82
degrees. My question would be if goldfish can be at the temp all year
around, is it good for the goldfish? Also, I was told by a speaker at a
fish club that fish should only be mixed with those from thier natural
environment. But do goldfish have one? Especially fancy goldfish, they
do not have a natural environment. So who makes the rules?

Starfish,

It is not that it can't be done, it all depends on how you keep your
Goldfish.  Personally, like now, I don't have heaters in my Goldfish
containers and the temps range around 60 degrees.  Clowns really don't do
well in 60 degree water.  Also my Goldfish are in water that is 8pH, 120ppm
KH with GH around 250 to 300 ppm and although Clowns can tolerate this they
don't necessarily do well in that type of water chemistry.  Now in the
summer time when temps in my ponds are in the 80's I put them outside and
they do well, but that is because of all the live food they have access too
besides what I put in to the pond, plus is the water warms up quick and
cools down slowly they sometimes are outside for 4 months, but that depends
on the year.  One time there were only outside for 2 months.  They seems to
do well in this stint outside, but they seem to really enjoy the 35 gallon
tank that I put them in when they come back inside where the water is softer
and more acid, but they seem to make both seasonal transitions well.

My gfs are in 7.0ph, temp is around 75, my KH is under 120ppm (have to do
something about that one....) and i havent tested the gh... At the moment
its summer so i dont have the heaters running and I'm lucky i have a big
tank because the temp is way more stable. It starts getting cold around
april so i turn on the heat before that so that the water has no chance of
cooling down....

Im having doubts about keeping a clown, even though my LFS who are quite
experienced with fish think that its ok...

Thans why i came here!!!

Thankyou

Starfish,

120ppm is a good level for KH.  KH is what keeps your pH stable in your
environment.  IMO 80-120ppm is a good spread for this reading.  Any lower
and you can possibly have pH crashes.
