We just purchased a very small (1") calico fantail. I notice after I
got him home that he has only 1 anal fin, which is on his left side. Is
this a problem? What should I do?  Thanks.

That's all they have.  Do you mean only one pelvic fin?

It won't bother the fish, it won't win any competitive shows, and if
it bothers you , then take it back.

In may have lost the fin to an injury, or may have been born without
one.  I've read that about 1 in 1,000 fantails are show quality, you
got one of the others.  If you like him, all to the good.

Charles,

Thanks for responding. The fin im referring to is on his bottom left
side, just before his tail. The fin is sticking up. It looks kind of
strange. I've heard that the fin on the other side might be growing
inside him, and could kill him. I dont care if he's perfect. (im not!)
but I dont want my kids to get attached to him, and have him die.
Thanks for your help.

All Fancy Goldfish have some birth defects. A Fancy Goldfish is a birth
defect that has been selectivly bred for generations. Some will be true to
type (show winners) others will be freaks.

Whomever told you that the 'missing' fin could be growing inside him was
talking out of thier ANAL FIN!
