I'm leaving a 3 inch fish with relatives for a couple of weeks. I was thinking of scooping him out of the aquarium and into a cheap plastic bowl (the kind that pet shops often sell as starter kits). This would be easier to do than hauling the big tank around. Would he be alright in that environment? I ask because the big aquarium has a pump & filter, whereas the cheap tank would have neither and he is a bit bigger than the fish who generally get sold with those tanks. I would put some gravel into the cheap tank and maybe a live plant. Are any plants better than others, e.g. do some help oxygenation? Especially if you have any Algae in your tank. My pond fish go for six months without food, although the water would be a tad colder than your aquarium. Option two would be to put him/her in a large Rubbermaid tote or Styrofoam cooler. You'll need an air pump too of course. The little ones always lasted for 4 or 5 days in my 1.5 gallon when I was raising a few tadpoles. I'm sure the big ones would last even longer???  SignatureK. I think you would be much, much better off leaving him where he is, feeding him before you go and asking your relatives or a friend to come and feed him - every three or four days would be absolutely fine, even if it has to be only once half way through your holiday it shouldn't be an issue. putting him into an unfiltered aquarium and moving him about would be much worse for him, imo. Thanks Bill & Sophie for your helpful responses. I think that's what I might do - leave the guy where he is and have someone call in a couple of times. I'd be wary of that - the stuff they use to hold the tablets together can't half pollute your tank. and if your gf is anything like my gf, he'll probably eat the lot within about 2 minutes! I was thinking of the kind of feeder which are basically chalk / grubs mixed together into a hard block. Those are horrible things and will foul the water. I tried one once and came home to a cloudy and chalk all through the gravel. Eww. Much better to have a neighbor feed occasionally. I left for 10 days and had a friend feed my small tropicals and pond goldies 3 times. They did fine. They sell a very nice 1.5 gallon setup with an undergravel filter for $20.00. It's a plastic decorative hexagonal tank. Makes a nice emergency tank too. That is what I keep my Betta in.
