Chronic Green Water Problem

My 100L tank has only one fantail goldfish (about 4"). I replace 30L of
water every 2 weeks and have 2 x Fluval plus 3 internal filters with a
strong air bubble feed.

For about 6 months the tank's had green water. I use King British Green
water control (synthetic organic polymer) - the green always comes back and
this dose my fish seems to be unable to come up for his food.

Is this stuff safe for long term use?

Any advice - much appreciated

Charlie,

Monitor your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. You may need to do a more
frequent
water change to control these levels (more than likely Nitrate). If that seems
to be
ok get a phosphate test kit. You could also try limiting the amount of light the
tank
gets - this will likely help.

I would prefer not using chemicals, but thats just my opinion.

I don't know - but I do know that I have a goldfish tank with direct
sunlight in the afternoon, and it got a bad case of green water hen I
was away at the beginning of spring. Aggressive water changes for a week
(40% + daily) and installing a cheap cheap CHEAP airpump driven
box-filter with fine filter floss in it cured the green water, 30-40%
water change weekly (when the sun is out, anyway!) has meant that it's
never come back. Flourish Excel has a reputation for enabling plants to
out-compete the algae for nutrients, but I couldn't really vouch for
that...

Thanks Geezer & Sophie - I'll try 10L (fresh water) a day for a few weeks
and check out my nitrate level.

I visit this NG about once a year and always get solid friendly help -
thanks so much.

Get some plants such as Anacharis to absorb the a/n/n naturally, or get a
small UV filter to kill the water born algea.
