hi

i have tons of excellent goldfish books, lots of experts knowledgbe. but
no one tells, what they do with young fish that is culled. when breeding
goldfish there are thousands of worthlesse fish with deformations in
body and fins or with wrong colors. the books write about "culling
them". and after that? flushing them in the toilet? or do they use them
as food for predator fish in another tank? i hope they don't sell this
crap to pet shops. do they? every "serious" book writes about only 10
fish out of 10,000 are worth keeping, the rest is "junk". ok, the better
junk can be sold, but what to do with the "real junk"?

Johannes,

For the most part they are usually sold as feeder fish, if they aren't too
deformed.  A friend who breeds Ranchus says that he uses his culls as bait
fish for fishing.  If the culls are still good swimmings they could also be
sold as bait fish if goldfish can be used in your area for bait, some places
they can not.

In Japan, they grind them up and make feed out of them and feed back to the
good fish or you can freeze them to kill them and use them for fertilizer
for your yard.

Like you said though, the better culls can be sold to stores for sale and
you keep the really good stuff or sell the good ones for a premimum price,
if you can get it for domestic fish in your area.

Culling is always one of the hardest things for most people to deal with.

Good luck.

What is wrong with selling them as feeders to a pet store?

Too bad you don't have a cat.
I'm sure they would enjoy them. ;-)

Just use them to feed your mature fish. Goldfish do feed on live food.

The previous suggestions work. You could also keep some of the larger
cichilds, I'm sure they would be happy to deal with your culls.
