How do I stop an algae eater from attacking?

I've got 7 fantail goldfish in a 55 gal tank along with 3 Albino(Golden)
Algae Eaters. One of the A.E.'s will attack the goldies if they get too
close. I noticed about three of my guys with missing scales one guy has
about a 1/8" patch missing!

1: How much harm can this cause my guys? They seem to be un-bothered.

2: Is there anything that can be done to stop the A.E.?

Another question is, These guys were originally feeders that I was using for
cycling. I didn't plan on getting to attached to them. However 3 of them are
now named and accepted in the family.I wanted to actually get some tropicals
later. I'm definately keeping my three guys. I want to give the other 4 to
the LFS. Is it that bad to mix tropicals and goldfish. I keep my tank @ a
constant 75-76F.

Thanks

$$ Remove them immediately!!!  They will eventually kill your goldfish by
rasping them and allowing bacterial or fungal infections to set in.

$$ The only way to stop them is to REMOVE THEM from the tank.

$$ Goldfish should be kept alone in a coolwater tank of their own.  They're
not tropical fish by any means.

it is bad.  they remove the protective slime coat and that lets in the bacteria and
it can kill your goldies.  get the ae out of the tank.
gf should never be used for cycling.  dont mix trops and GF.   Ingrid

I've never had one but I classify anything with a sucker mouth that eats algae and an
algae eater and not to be kept with GF cause they get a taste for slime (or get
hungry?) and go after the GF ...usually at night.  Ingrid

I think they're talking about a Chinese or Siamese Algae Eater or Thai
Flying Fox or something similar.
